[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Trunk gun? (Page 1 of 2)
Posted: 2/21/2011 4:44:01 PM EDT
| Guys I'm wanting to put an AK in the trunk of each of my vehicles. So I don't want to spend alot of money on a "trunk" gun. I know Century has a bad reputation. I have been looking at the Romanian underfolders from them. Are they really that bad? Do the Century builds lack reliability? I have a Tantal from them. It fires every time I pull the trigger. Thats the most important thing to me for a trunk gun. I mean God forbid I get into a situation where I would need to get it out of the trunk and use it. But reliability is the most important thing to me for this purpose. Plus AK's fire even if they get some rust on them and aren't oiled and kept spotless all the time. You guys think the Century Romanian underfolder builds or maybe the WASR would be good for my intended use. |
|
Most any would be fairly dependable.
But if those are your reasons for wanting to get one for each car, I'd actually suggest good shotguns and pistols instead of AK's. Remember, you're also responsible for any rounds that go traveling downrange anywhere you are. Think about the ballistics of your weapons. |

A cheap Mossberg 500, while not as sexy as an AK, is a much better choice. |

I have the pistol already of course. The AK will be for a real SHTF situation. Only in dire circumstances would it be used.

Oh I'm thinking about having a shotgun in there also. Best to be prepared for any situation.

| I will check that out. I've read alot of people end up not liking those after they get them. Plus I can get the Century underfolder for like $420. I will just have to see. Sad that its got to this. But even in my sleepy community robberys are becoming more often. And I hate to say it because I am in no way prejudice but every damn time its a "thug", "gangsta" thats doing the robbing, shooting. You just never know what those damn gang bangers might pull out. So for me its best to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. |
| I'm not saying this to offend you in anyway, but I think there's a much greater chance of one of those thugs breaking in your car and an ak falling into the wrong hands then a handgun with a couple magazines not being enough to get away and back to your assault rifle at the house. That's how most thugs get big guns in the first place. |
|
Lots of logical posts. I guess it depends where you live.. if it's unpopulated wilderness or desert an AK would make a good trunk gun. If it's a populated area, I'd much rather have a shotgun. (and I am a big AK fan). That round will travel really far and rip through a lot of stuff before stopping. I'd rather not have that on my mind in an already bad situation.
Theft, as mentioned about is another real consideration. I know I've read about two AR's here in my state being stolen from different vehicles in the last few months. Both were visible from outside the vehicle! Use common sense if you do carry in the vehicle and always keep it out of sight. If you want a cheap AK, I can't suggest that anyone to buy a Century. I would suggest looking for a used MAK-90 or well built kit gun. It's not super common to find them cheap, but you still can with some patience. |

+1. My Saiga .308 was stolen from my trunk a few years ago in front of my house in a gated community. Fortunately, I got it back from the West Palm Beach PD almost 2 years later. It was recovered in a big drug bust. Still in perfect shape, & doesn't live in the trunk anymore. GARY N4KVE

I keep a Kel-tec Sub-2000 and two Glock 18 mags in a locked compartment in my trunk. And it is perfect for that role: Light (4 pounds), easy to store since it folds, reliable, accurate, plenty effective out to 100 yards, and at $280...inexpensive enough that I don't need to wory about it.
I'm not a fan of Kel-tec's handguns, but their rifles are good guns. I think the Sub-2000 is a near-perfect trunk gun. (If I couldn't safely stow the gun in my trunk, I wouldn't have it there. The risk of theft is too high. As it is now, you wouldn't even know the compartment in my trunk is there unless you were familiar with the car.) |
|
Why would you want a gun in your trunk?
Oh - I know . . . because if you are like most people, you are away from home 30% of your life and If the SHTF with you away from home, it would be nice to have a rifle. So what's the point in having a second-class rifle? Seems to me, you should have the same quality rifle in your trunk as you do by the bedside. So instead of looking for what is "cheap" that you can put in your trunk, maybe you ought to evaluate what you have and sell something less important, so that you can afford to have the same quality defense away from home as when you are home. And yes, I keep a good-quality AK and mags in the vehicle. Sure it might be stolen. So might the one in the bedroom. So might my car or stereo. If I feel the need I can cable lock it to the car's frame. Its all about balancing risk. |
| Although possible i am highly doubtful of anyone breaking into either of my daily drivers. One of them is a 4 door 19 year old car, the other is a 4 door 13 year old car. Thieves look for the nice vehicles because they know its highly likely they have the nice stuff in them. Both of mine look like junk warmed over. But they get me from point A to B. Which is all that matters to me. |

I am not married, nor do I have children. Nor do I have car payments or any crap like that. So what I can afford is not an issue. If I so chose I could get one ot those internally silenced AK's from Red Jacket Firearms and throw that in the trunk. But why? When a nice cheap AK will provide the same service minus the sound deafening. AK's are known for reliability even when left in the mud. I can't think of a better gun to throw in the trunk and simply forget about it unless needed. No need to oil it or do anything to it. I could leave it there for 20 years and it would fire fine.

I dont really understand the logic of having an AK in the trunk of your vehicle.
You are an attorney's wet dream if you think you are going to use one of them "evil assault rifles that the mexican warlords" carries to defend yourself. If you are looking for something reliable, doesnt need much oiling and will not make you out to be the bad guy I would suggest and shotgun with a deer barrel (20" bbl) or a handgun (without the 33 rd magazine like the psycho Jared Loughner used). AK pattern rifles, albeit reliable do NOT have the best reputation as a defensive firearm. My AK is the last firearm I would put in my vehicle. Your choice, but think about it logically for a second. |

It seems like the OP is concerned about a SHTF kind of situation like 4 armed, masked guys pouring out of your bank as you pull up, breakdown of society, etc. The last thing I would want if I was going to be caught in a gunfight out in the street is a shotgun (low capacity, limited range, slow to reload back to low capacity) or a handgun for some of the same reasons. Some sort of high capacity, mag-fed semiauto rifle is called for here. |

What he said. Even anti-gun DAs don't file charges against dead guys. You have to be alive to worry about it. |
|
I find it unfortunate and sad that people base their gun buying and self defense decisions based on what an attorney might do if they ever found themselves in a situation that they had to use it to defend themselves or others.
A Homicide is either justifiable or it isn't. It doesn't matter if you use an M1 Abrams, civil war musket, toothpick, or whatever. I wouldn't hesitate to use either one of my AK's or my Glocks w/33rd mag to defend myself or someone else if needed. For the OP, I would get a cheap ass WASR as long as you inspect it and know it works and secure it well by attatching it to something solid in the vehicle. |

Shotguns are for killing birds and clays. No sense bringing a shotgun to a rifle fight, unless you like to lose. I keep an AK with a loaded mag inserted plus a five pack of loaded 30's...just in case. |

customize it to fit your rifle/shotgun ,Bolt it to the frame somewhere out of sight yet quickly accessible and your in business. I have one that is wired to the vehicle so my keys have to be in the ignition and you have to know where the hidden push button switch is to get the rifle out. It also accepts a handcuff key as a backup which all of you already have.... right? :)
It also is setup in such a way that the magazine is in the rifle but you cannot charge a live round into the chamber unless you remove the rifle from the lock/mount Pro-Guard Gun Lock |

I do not want to turn this into an AK vs Shotgun debate, but you have to account for each piece of shot fired out of a shotgun as well. A cheap 500 will probably not be able to do that past 30 yards. Chose the tool you can use well, not what tool you think that might work well in a given situation. Also +1 for the draco. If you are concerned about theft, take it in the house with you and get a lock bar for when it is in the vehicle. |

after my car got broken into....
i dont store guns in there anymore. Thankfully I took my guns out that night. I think someone was LOOKING for guns...they tossed my damn car, ripped the console apart, left everything in there...including my Garmen GPS unit. Carry a pistol. Call it good. UNLESS you can literally lock the gun to the vehicle by way of a gun rack, concealed, with a locking mechanism that cant be fucked with by simply using a crow bar or bolt cutters. ETA: just so you guys know, I live in a GOOD neighborhood, suburbia, upper class, car was parked in a LIT area in front of the house, visible from the road. |

I'm sure as hell not going to pull over, open the trunk, and rummage around inside |

Logically, in what situation will a handgun not be enough, but would allow you time to park the car, get out, open the trunk, retrieve the rifle, and then engage? I mean srsly... Keep it close by and ready to go? Ready to go... For what? A rifle can't really be used inside a vehicle by the person driving, so it implies either a second person or being dismounted. And again I ask, what situation do you anticipate needing a long arm in? It's no good in a sudden emergency, and if you feel the need to carry a loaded rifle at the ready on your commute I suggest you change routes. Which leaves the typical shtf fighting your way home through the post apocalyptic wastelands Mad Max fantasy scenarios. |

|
Putting aside the rural "I hit a deer" or "I saw a coyote" scenarios, "sudden SHTF" is the oft-given justification for a trunk gun. However you really have to translate that to be "unexpected SHTF that may require rifle shooting to get home".
What sort of things do NOT fit that description? 9/11 –– did not require shooting Katrina –– was not a surprise The LA Riots were about the only "surprise" SHTF where you might have cause to deploy a rifle to get home. Say a big earthquake hits California... do you think things would go Mad Max 5 minutes later? I think it would take until the public recognized that police/fire/govt were overwhelmed before the first hints of lawlesness appeared, and several days without a realistic expectation for a quick return to normalcy before it would be more widespread. Basically it takes time without authority for most people to start thinking "my actions have no consequences any more!" I'm just pulling this out of my ass but it sounds good. |

What kind of fantasy land are you living in?
Seriously, if you would stay in a fight where you are out numbered you are dumb. Second, if it's not my fight I am out! The only thing I am reaching for is a cell phone while I am stomping on the peddle. Quoted:

Stand in front of my slug gun at 50 yards and tell me it is a bird gun.
