I have a ak74 wasr that has a side folder stock, it is missing the top screw. Where do I get a replacement from? What is the thread pitch? Length? Go to ACE Hardware, look in the Metric nut and bolt section, get the 5mm x 10, .8 pitch thread, they only come in the Pan head, Phillips slot version. The forward screw will fit fine, the rearward screw will be too long (they do not have any shorter) so screw it all of the way in the hole and trim off the excess at the bottom with a dremmel and make sure the folder clears (it should). Remove the screws, then clean and paint them black. They cost about $.35 each. You can use the flat head, hex slot however, the hex tends to strip easily and then they are very difficult to get out. |

If you buy the appropriate size metric hex wrench, there's no reason for the head to get damaged. The problem is with overtighting the screws, if you just use blue loctite and snug (a few inch pounds) they would be fine. The problem is people are afraid the side folder will come loose from the "G" force shock while they are out shooting, so they just crank them down like lug nuts on a car. Otherwise the hex is fine, just hard to find unless you buy a box of them from any one of the large industrial supplier. |

The type of device used to tighten the screw makes no difference if you over tighten it. Any of them can cause damage to the head when used incorrectly. The key is to know what you're doing, not the tool you're using. I purchased the 2 hex head screws on my folder at ACE Hardware, along with a nut to restore any damage to the threads from cutting it to length. You simply run the nut on the screw, cut to length and run the nut off. No chance of damaging the stock that way. |

I found flat head, v-neck, slotted M5x.8 at true value. YMMV.
The ones I got from HD were crap and would break with even moderate hand tightening. The real ones are lens head and hollow on the end of the shaft, and are designed to be flared after installation. I've had some success just drilling a little hole about 4mm dia x 2.5mm deep http://www.arizonaresponsesystems.com/notes/notestools/toolsddrak/pagetoolsddrak.shtml#anchor14 |
