This is pretty much copy/pasted from the "Russian" forum. I received no responses there, so I figured that I'd re-post here:
I have pretty much decided that next year's major project will be a Saiga chambered in .308 Winchester. I just have a few questions, the answers to which will determine how I configure it. I'm sorry if these questions get asked a lot, but I did a search and came up with nothing. 1) Will the AK Tech Sights work on a .308 Saiga? There are two different types of receiver top cover that they work with, and I don't know if either of them are compatible with Saiga .308s. What about with some Dremel time? 2) What is the lowest Picatinny rail that is compatible with the standard Russian side-mount? I hate all of the Soviet optics that I have used, so I plan on using a more standard optic. Maybe something with a German #4 reticule. 3) Do people use (and like) the 25 round mags available for these? Are they reasonably reliable? Thanks! |
| I have a Saiga .308 & I love it, but I can't really answer any of your questions. Mine was restored to pistol grip config, Romy side folder, barrel shortened to 14" with AK 74 comp permanently attached. In my opinion, 20 round mags hang down pretty far already so 25 might be too big. Check out "SAIGA12.COM" for any questions you may have. GARY N4KVE |
| FBMG made mine, but they're out of business. Surefire makes the hi caps now, but it's a hit or miss deal with them. Sort of like Century. I believe Promag started to make them too, & reports have been good. There's a guy on the Saiga forum making metal mags that run 100%. His avatar is CCCSPECS, or something like that. GARY N4KVE |

These mags are great run 100% in my Saiga. Just a little pricey. |

Surefire mags work fine in mine. I had one FBMG mag that I had to return as it wouldn't feed well.
I'd go with a 15 round mag if they were cheaper but they all cost the same from Surefire. The 25 round mags protrude too far and add plenty of weight when fully loaded. You can cut Surefire mags down. |
