I posted yesterday that I was thinking about buying a Saiga .223. After reviewing everyone's responses (thanks), i went ahead and made the trade. What I got was a like-new Saiga 223 that has already had the pistol grip conversion done. It has:

1) Tapco collapsible T6 stock;

2) Tapco SAW pistol grip;

3) Tapco trigger group;

4) Original Saiga long handguard; and

5) Saiga ten round magazine.

Overall, I'm very happy with the new gun. There's something about the Saiga name that inspires confidence. I do have some questions, though:

1) What are my mag options w/o installing a bullet guide? Am I limited to Saiga and Surefire mags?

2) Where can those mags be ordered at a decent price?

3) Is the bullet guide the way to go, and if so, can a non-mechanically inclined person install it?

4) Any must have add-ons?

Any thoughts ya'll have are appreciated. I will report back after I have a chance to shoot it with the ten round mag.

You might also post this in the Russian section.

I do not know much about Saiga .223 but the only "AK" mags I have been able to find in .223 at a decent price are Promags. If there aren't any better alternatives I'd rather pay $30 for Surefire Saiga magazines than buy Promags at any cost. Surefire magazines aren't the bomb but they have treated fine in other calibers.

Bullet guides are easy to install and it gets you using the durable inexpensive surplus mags.  A saiga like you have with a bullet guide gets you into a good rifle on the cheap.

Just out of curiosity, what good, cheap mil-surp .223 mags are available, and will work with the .223 Saigas?

For a 7.62 Saiga the bullet guide is a no-brainer since there is an abundance of the above described mags in that caliber, but I'm not so sure about this in .223.  I know of a few commercial mags in .223 from Norinco and Polytech, but which of these would work, and what others are out there?

You will definitely need a bullet guide. Get it from Dinzag Arms.

Get a Magnolia State Armory AR mag adapter, and use AR mags.

They require a bit for installation, but its not hard to do if you are mechanically inclined.

There are no good cheap mil-surp 223 magazines.

There are Romanian 223 magazines, East German Weiger 223 magazines, and Bulgarian circle 10 magazines.  These are known to work well.  They are not cheap when I have found them.

There are Galil Orlites which work well, but they're a separate classification IMO because they are not intended for an AK but they are for the Galil.  They only work if you mod the ribbing on the plastic ones  Metal ones do not work.  They are not cheap when I have found them.

There are Chinese mags.  They may not fit and they are very expensive.

There are Yugo 223 mags.  They may not fit and they are very expensive.

With all that said, the price of Bulgy Circle 10's may come down.

Thanks for confirming what I thought to be the case.  From the earlier posts I thought maybe I was overlooking a viable option for readily available, inexpensive, mil-surp AK mags in .223.

Half of my mags are standard 5.45 magazines with Robarm .223 followers in them.  It cost me about $8 per 5.45 mag + about $5 per follower.  So about $13 per mag total.  That's relatively inexpensive.  Just file the side of the feed lips a bit and the 5.45 mags lock right in.

Today you can get 5.45 mags from AIM for $13 and Robarm followers for $6.  That's still less than $20 per magazine.  While not cheap that isn't very expensive, either.

Word on the street (or at least, on the Saiga12.com forums) is that the Tapco galil mags can work OK but depending on the Saiga .223 rifle the Tapco mags might have a lot of wobble to them.
