I'm sure this has already been covered, but my search didn't turn up what I wanted.

My MAK90's barrel tip measures .549 OD

My question is, can I thread it using the 14mm standard or do I have to use the USA 1/2x28??

I have seen conflicting answers. That's the reason for this.

Thanks!!!

.550 is ideal for 14mm. if you have .549 you can go 14mm but may/or may not be a little loose. you can put a bit of light locktite on them to take up some slack if they are loose.

I had read in another site that if it's .550 +/- 10 then you are good to go.

Then I read in another site that if you don't have at LEAST .550, then you have to go 1/2.

Confusing................

Thanks for the reply.

I thing I'm just going to try the 14mm and if it doesn't work, then go the 1/2.

I am trying to return my MAK90 to the pre grind it all off condition.

0.001in isn't going to make the difference between 14mm and 1/2in threads.

If a MAK's muzzle diameter is 0.550" it is as it was originally manufactured to receive 14mm threads but was just never threaded due to import restrictions.  The MAKs that have muzzle diameters closer to 0.500in were the ones that were originally threaded 14mm but were later ground/turned down to allow them to be legally imported into the US.

As far as yours being loose once threaded, that will depend on how deeply you cut the threads, and this is controlled by how tightly you adjust the die on your final cut.  Cut them a bit shallow on the first pass and try your muzzle device.  If it won't screw on just tighten your die a bit and make a second pass over the threads to deepen them a bit.

Of course this can vary from one muzzle device to another since 0.001in is a pretty close tolerance.  I have a NHM-90 with original factory threads.  When I went to screw on a FH I had to really torque it on to get it screwed on fully, whereas I've seen others with original 14mm threads that had muzzle devices flopping around.

You do realize that many photos of Chinese soldiers carrying full auto Chinese AK's have unthreaded barrels just like your MAK 90. Seems most of the threaded Chinese AK's were for export. GARY  N4KVE
