Hey, I just got a plum set for my Century NDS AK-74 clone. I love this set, but putting this thing on has been a total bitch.

My biggest problem is that the lower handguard has metal lips that stick out to the front and they are not completely covered by the retaining mechanism with the lever (I don't know the exact term) that is on the barrel.  However the mechanism is in place and the lever closes completely when forcefully pushed down on the lips.  it is holding the handguard steady even though it seems that 2mm of the metal lips can be seen.  Is this an issue? Should I file down the metal lips?

If the hand guards are tight and the hand guard retainer locks properly, I would not file anything down.  You could end up with a loose or wobbly hand guard.  Take a picture.  Let's see exactly what you're talking about (an excuse for gun porn).

The metal can be seen on mine too.  Like said above, if they fit. they fit.  Remove any material and they won't.  The distance between the HG retainer and the receiver is fixed so if you shorten the HG it will be too short to fit this space correctly, resulting in a lower HG that slides back and forth.  Not good.

Thanks a ton for the replies, I was beginning to think what was happening is what you just told me Imposer, so that's good, and as soon as I get the rest of the set on I will put out some gun porn, she's not that pretty really, she has a broken bayo lug and is purely a shooter, I just need a red dot to complete this set up

My SGL-21 does the same thing. I think the shield is designed to keep the polymer from touching the retainer. I think it is an effort to reduce heat transfer.

Good point that I hadn't considered.  It isn't that noticable on mine so I didn't really give it too much thought, but when I was first fitting them I did think it was a bit odd that the retainer didn't cover the metal.

Don't get me wrong. I thought it was designed to allow fitting at first. I thought "That doesn't look right.... but it fits." Very odd looking, but a genius design. I wish I had more of those handguards.

When we build an AK, the rifle is built for the handguards that i bought.  There are slight differences b/t handguard designs and can be fitted to most AKs.

My KVar handguard (upper and lower) fit without any issues on my WASR10, however I had previously purchased a Tapco Intrafuse (sp) hand guard that had the exact fitting problem you described on the lower handguard. I ended up filing it down, carefully as not to over do it resulting in a loose fit, and got it to where that lever would close with moderate force. My thinking was that if I had to really force that lever down, it was just one more part that could one day break from fatique. Just my .02 for what it's worth.

Now that you mention it, I did have to file just a bit from the forward metal edge so get the retainer all the way back into position.  But I just considered that as part of the normal fitting process.  Once fitted to my rifle though, it still has some of the metal showing at the front.  If I had removed enough metal so that the retainer covered it all the HG would have definitely been too short to lcok in place tightly.  YMMV.

Agreed, I too have a bit of metal showing... the amount filed off was really minimal.
