I'm sure someone has thought of this before, but I was struck with the idea of an AK in 308. Anyone know of anything like that?

Buy a Saiga in .308 and convert it or have it converted by a builder. They have been around for quite awhile now, go look in the Russian section and you will see some.

There are also Yugo M77s and M72s in .308

Mitchell imported them and you see them for sale (pre and post-ban) from time to time.  The .308 M72s are very rare, they came into the country in very low numbers.

I have a Saiga .308 & it's a great gun. Restored back to the AK look, & has a Romy side folder. Great gun, & built at the real Russian AK factory.  GARY  N4KVE

my friend has a saiga 308 20"  with a super sniper. Its a great gun.  I'd prefer the barrel cut to 18" since its not accurate enough to effectively use the 20" lenth, but its pretty accurate and one bad sumbich.

What accuracy can be expected with a converted saiga and what improvements can be made to help accuracy?

Accuracy is acceptable for what they are 1.5 - 3 m.o.a. and the barrels are chrome lined, not much can be done to improve the accuracy outside of installing a new match grade barrel i would recommend a shilen barrel blank and if you are willing to hand load that will give an advantage in finding the bullet seat depth "sweet spot" for one specific rifle.

They are like any ak in that you may get lucky and get one out of the box that is above average.... good luck!!

I have the Saiga and Vepr in 308. I would like to have the Yugo 77, very nice.

I have one a Mitchell Arms M77 in 308.  It's a great rifle and looks more like a real AK than a Saiga but it will cost more.  Accuracy is acceptable.
