| I was cleaning my WASR 10/63 and decided I should pop the wood off and clean it, inspect the barrel, etc. It was tight coming off, but no big deal. However, I canNOT get it back down. I've tried hitting it, vice grips, everything I can think of. Clearly I'm doing something wrong, but I don't for the life of me know what it is. Any ideas? |

Try locking the forend latch down without the handguard in place. Hold the handguard up against the rifle. Look at where the front/back will have to sit in the receiver and forend latch. Odds are if it was tight coming off you're probably having trouble getting the lip back in the receiver. Try a rubber mallet. |
| Just be very careful with the lower handguard retainer. Everything has to come off the barrel to replace it. I think you are not getting it far enough aft to be able to lock it. Take the handguard out and check for fit in the receiver - there should be no gap at the receiver. The retainer should fit snugly over the the fore end. Seems like it should go back together with the same components as before. |

Stop hitting it and there is no reason to use vice grips. All you will do is make it worse. If you put the handguard on correctly the handguard retainer will lock in place easily enough. |

I get that it shouldn't be abused, that it'd be a giant pain in the backside if I were to break the thing. A few hours of frustration had the better of me for a bit though.
Still don't know what the issue was. I put it together and took it apart about 20 times trying to get it to go. Finally it worked, with a little coaxing from a rubber mallet. May have been something stupid I was doing, but I don't know what it could have been. Thanks for the suggestion of the rubber mallet. Much longer without that and the finish would have been screwed I'm sure. Again, frustration isn't something I'm good at. Guess I should have just been content to be like I'd been for years and leave the dang things on. |
