I have been toying around with the idea of a 74 style rifle. The two i have been eyeing are both CAI guns. Now one of my questions is what are the 922r (i think thats the right one lol) compliance parts on the polish tantal, and the akm 74 m74 rifle. This would be my first rifle of the ak variety so special cautions or lubrication instructions? finally i really like the triangle side fold stocks like on the Ak74Su.... would this be something that i could install on these rifles? Lastly i know CAI quality is hit and miss but could yall post some pictues of specific problems or issues that i should check on or for!

THANKS for the help everyone!

You could install that stock, but it's really not worth it on those low cost rifles.

Figure the rifle is only $400 or so.  The stock parts are going to run you about $200.  Installing them takes a fair bit of cutting on the back of the receiver and riveting in a new trunion.  An AK smith is going to charge you $100 or so to do this.  It's also irreversible.

Pretty soon your low cost rifle has nearly doubled in cost by adding that stock.  At that point you may as well have just paid more for a nicer rifle that came with the folding stock already on it.

I'm not sure about the 922r parts on those rifles.  For lube, I just cover the rails and other contact areas(bolt stem and locking lugs) in CLP and that's it.  Some guys use grease on the rails.

Some Century Tantals were built with .223 barrels instead of 5.45x39 barrels and didn't shoot worth a damn. Keyhole.

the .223 barrels are they marked so? and where would those marks be, also keyholeing what is it caused by, incorrect headspaceing?

thanks for the info, and still hopeing to find out about the compliance parts i guess the mags are not one of them since they seem to ship with com block mags....

thanks for the info so far guys keep it coming!

The keyholing was supposedly caused by using a .223 barrel for a .221 caliber round of the 5.45x39 cartridge.  May have the wrong twist rate for certain cartridges and not stabilize correctly.

They are probably using correct diameter/twist rate bores in their rifles now as the Bulgarian Century builds have been getting decent reviews, but I wouldn't want to get stuck with one of the old Tantals as they refused to make good on some of them.
