what doe the first 4 numbers on an AK's SN mean? lets say the trunnion of a sheet metal AK had 1983XXXXX stamped in it? Does that indicate the yr of mfg?
The gun looks like a typical basic Century AK type thing. |

On the century romanians, it's the year the original gun was manufactured, in romania.
That gun was later broken down into parts and rebuilt onto a semi-auto US-made receiver, within the past year or two. So, a "WASR 1975" model rifle was made with parts stamped 1975, but its current incarnation was built from those parts in 2009 or so. For non-century/non-romanian guns, the meaning of those markings and S/N components will vary from company to company and origin country to origin country. |

The receiver was was made in Romania, which is why it is so marked on the side. Century GP1975s use a US made receiver and are assembled in the US, but those rifles are not WASRs. Second the pattern of marking the year of manufacture in the serial number of Romanian rifles is not consistent: Some Romanian rifles have the original year of manufacture as the first four digits of the serial number. Some Romanian rifles have the year of manufacture as the last two digits of the serial number. Third, the Romanians have been demilling rifles and rebuilding them into WASRs since the barrel ban took effect (12/31/06). |

funnny thing abou the SN is that is is stamped on that little strip of the trunnnion on the L side of the gun towards the back of the trunnion where the top cover snaps over it. The Receiver proper has no SN I don't think...
Well, either the receiver or the dust cover has a partial SN on there too, the same number, but not the whole number. It looks like my buddy's plain WSAR save for the location of the SN & the fact that the dust cover is sort of...ribbed. The dust cover is stamped w/ like ribs. Never seen an AK like that... |

The Receiver proper has no SN I don't think... The serial number is always stamped on the trunnion. The only receivers with numbers on the sheetmetal are US made. Of course, it's impossible for a US receiver manufacturer to put the number on the trunnion, since it's not included. |
