Midway has these on sale.  I was wondering how important they are to have on hand.  I've never see a broken shell in any rifle I've ever owned or shot.  In what situations would you need such an extractor?  What causes "broken shells"?  Couldn't they be pushed out from the muzzle end with a cleaning rod or similar?  Are they more prevelent in 7.62x39 AKs than in other rifles?  The extractors are cheap at Midway.  I was just wondering if this is something that I would ever use before I go buying one?

Personally I've never used one, although I do have one for my AR just in case.  A broken shell extractor is used when the case head is ripped away from the case body, for what ever reason.  This leaves the case body stick in the chamber without a head for the extractor to grip.  Without a head it is also difficult to drive it out from the muzzle.

I wouldn't make a special order to get one probably, but if ordering anyway it wouldn't hurt to throw one in since they are cheap, and you just never know.

If you never have a broken shell you won't need it.
If you do have a broken shell, you'll wish you had one, as pushing out a case that doesn't have the base on it can be difficult.
I've never had to use my 7.62x39 BSE.

One of those items in your range bag that fit the bill as "better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it".

I've never used mine, but it's always there.

Same here.  I have it and I'm glad to have never used it.

Rather have one and never need it then need one and not have it.
