I was going to ask for some advice on an AK 74.  I was looking at purchasing one in the near future but their are soooo many brands out there, my question is this are their some AK 74 manufactures that I should steer clear from, and which ones should I take interest in.  All the help I can get would be nice, thanks to all that reply.

OP, what is your price range?

Why are you buying it (just want a shooter, or collector, or SHTF rifle, or ???)

The answer to your question depends on a few different factors that you haven't shared with us.

In terms of who to stay away from, avoid Lancaster Arms for certain.

The TGI truck guns and classics were a phenomenal buy (priced at $399 and $499 respectively). They had a Bulgarian receiver, original Bulgarian chrome-lined barrel, matching parts, and were assembled at the ISD factory in Bulgaria. They were built using kits from supposedly unissued Bulgarian arsenal, select-fire AK-74's. The only U.S. parts on the truck guns were a new FCG and a domestic magazine. The classics had a U.S. FCG and Ironwood furniture. There may be one or two classics left if you call TGI today or tomorrow. Then production is done..for good.

Arsenal rifles are great quality pieces, but they're too expensive for me. I wish they would hack at least $100 off of their prices.

Thanks for the info, I was mainly looking for a dependable shooter, to complement my AR's (Colt, and LMT).

If you want top shelf stuff, which it appears you do from your AR's, buy the SGL 31.  They are a bit higher than the other options, but well worth the money.  I got mine at my local dealer for 750 plus tax.

The Truck Guns at the very least were not made from unissued weapons.  The one I got, and a number I have seen, have bolts and carriers that look to have been attacked by pissed off beavers.  They work fine, but they are not unissued or unused by any means.

Don't rule out a kit build from a high quality builder either.  I have a very very nice 74 that In Range built and StephenNW has a very nice build from Arizona Response Systems(if I got the name wrong plz correct me).  These can be had for slighly less than a SGL31 as well.

SAR2s and SLR105Rs  are good if you can find one.

A simple Saiga that you do the conversion on is also a good choice if you don't need all the bells and whistles

Looks like you saw a bad bunch. My truck gun is pristine. The bolt and carrier show very minor use, but definitely not to the degree you claim to have seen. Everything else is in great condition. It was a phenomenal buy all around...so much so that K-VAR had to put out hate mail in order to get people to buy the SGL 31's.

I bought one of the TGI $499 guns and I concur with the pissed off beaver bolt and carrier appearance.  No complaints however with it's functionality or external appearance of the gun... especially at that price point.

Word on the street....the BCG / bolts with the 3 digit serials are of Russian origin.

I am VERY, VERY happy with my Centerfire Systems "Bulgarian" AK-74... only $369

I dropped two handfuls of sand into the receiver with the dust cover off and then bump fired 90 rounds (3 mags) without any problems.

And this is coming from a guy who says TERRIBLE things about Century Arms due to my WASR experience.

The weird thing about my rifle is that the bolt is numbered 33x, but the receiver is 333x. I don't know if these numbers are important, so the "x" is filling in for the last number. The number that "x" represents is the same on both the receiver and the bolt. I don't know if one of the numbers was rubbed off of the bolt or what.

No, a lot of people saw ones in the exact same condition.  Some people got good kits, others got kits that were ridden hard and put up wet.  You can hear about a lot of them in the TGI thread over at akforum.  I paid $399 so I am not really complaining, I am just correcting the incorrect information about these guns.

Yes I have heard the word on the street.  Being Russian does not blow wind up my skirt and get my panties wet.  I would be just as or more happy with a Bulgarian bolt and carrier.

I know all about that thread. I spend most of my time on that forum. Most guys got fantastic rifles, nothing like what you describe. Maybe you're overly critical or picky, but you're one of the few I have heard describe the parts in that condition. I'm just correcting your correction of the "incorrect" information about these guns.

And what exactly did I describe?

A bad rifle? No.

A non-functional rifle? (which some got) No.

An unusable rifle? No.

No I described a well used chewed up bolt and carrier, which others got as well, on a $399 used surplus parts kit gun assembled by ISD which everyone knew was the case going in on the buy.

Did you try and pass them off as unused/new kits?  Yes.

Were they?  No.

Accept being wrong and move on.
