What's the general concensus on the Czech VZ58 rifles?  I have a chance to pick one up, but I am not too sure at this time.  I know they use proprietary mags, but don't know much else.  Any reason to avoid them?

There is and article in Guns Magazine March 2009 by Holt Bodinson all about the rifle. they show a retail price of $740 he gave it a good rating, If I found one in great condition at a good price and it was a Savz58 chambered for 7.62x39,I would buy it.

I've always wanted one just because they're different.  I would probably make sure it was czech built and not on an aftermarket receiver.

GET IT.  My CZ vz58 has become my all time favorite rifle.  It is lighter than the AK and just as reliable.  I really like my AKs a lot more than my AR, but not as much as my VZ.  Especially if it is a Czechpoint vz58, as they are worth the extra $$.

I've handled two completely different versions at gun shows.  They look the same from a distance, but that's it.  The cheaper version $650 is the rifle that Century or Atlantic sells.  It felt cheap and just as heavy as an AK.  All these I've seen have had the folding stock.  I was not impressed.  On the flipside, I saw a used CZ-USA model that was stamped D-Technik.  This version had the bakelite stock and was remarkably lighter and more refined.  It was a little worn and seller wanted $710 with one mag and nothing else.  CZ-USA lists the price at $1015 and Czechpoint lists them from $900-$980 (+$30 for original grey).  I can't justify this high price, but then again people pay almost as much or more for AKs and the VZ58 is better than the AK in every aspect - D-Technik VZ58s that is.

Bump... I'm interested in hearing from more VZ.58 owners.

Recent thread

Repeating myself from there, the Czechpoint rifle is superb.  Compared to AK's, lighter, more accurate, better ergonomics, great trigger, smooth action.

I built one from a grade 1 kit on an ORF receiver.  The only problem with the receiver is the bullet guide was a little low.  I was able to work around it. I love the design of the bolt.  It drops the locking lugs into the receiver, instead of rotating the bolt.  makes it easy to headspace.  Biggest negative is the high cost of US parts.  I ended up machining my own gas piston and FCG. The barrel is 15.4 inches so I had to pin and weld a us made flashhider.  The threads a RH so standard AK muzzle attachments don't work.  I finished the rifle with Duracoat.  Lighter than an AK and feels much better.   Only one range trip so far.  No malfunctions.  It is shooting high so I need to work on the front sight.  Will post pick tonight if I get a chance.

the vz58s are awesome, as i have 4 magazines which they were featured in and were highly praised for what it is.  as compared to my aks picking it up and aiming is such a natural pointer compared to my chicom aks, heck even the side folder on the vz is way more comfortable to shoot than my underfolder chicom.  my cz came from cz-usa.    some pics

side by side comparo with the vz and mak90 w/irons 25 yards for now, rained out

I see a VZ2008, same as VZ-58 from Classic Arms

http://www.classicarms.us/

It's down near the middle of the main page. Anyone know where this one came from.Is it a Century Arms unit and is it not as good as CZ USA?

I'm not that well versed in this stuff, but am VERY interestesd in the design.
