I'm thinking about asking Santa for a WASR-10/63 underfolder for Christmas. My only concern is the cheekweld compared to the regualar fixed stock WASR. How big of a difference is there?

I own both. Either one is too short, but the weld itself is fine on both. AK-47 rifles are made for people with short arms!    Bill T.

I vote for fixed, but that's just me. I had a under folder and just could not get use shooting to it.

I find it hard to believe you could get a good cheek weld with an metal frame stock.
Sidefolding or underfolding.

I've am interested in this question too.

i have an old school wasr from the ban days I dressed up It had the Drogonouv stock originally then I put this romy wire folder on it. Wrap with some leather or paracord and you can make your cheek weld as you wish on this side folder not sure about underfolder.

Can't speak about underfolders, I've shot them but didn't feel particularly great about the cheekweld. Wire folders are also dubious.

Triangle side folders are fine, the stock comb is the same height as a fixed stock. Even with differences in height between optics, krink sights and regular AK sights it's easy to get a good solid cheekweld.

Couple side folders in action:

The underfolding stocks kind of droop down and are not in line like the fixed stocks. They provide a slightly less comfortable cheek weld, but it dosen't bother me.

who's the hippie Zen?

l like the side folders much more so than the underfolders. That being said, I'm thinking about converting one of mine (a solid stock) to an underfolder...just b/c.

The top one is the owner of Tac47 Industries, an AK wizard. He did the side folder conversion on my S12

Second guy is Raoul_Duke from Saiga-12.com, he's owns a variety of Tromix SBS's. He's got hippie hair for sure, but he's a clay pigeon shootin mofo with his 8" shorty

Back on topic, I've shot underfolders and wire side folders and can't really decide which has a better cheekweld. Neither really has a good one IMO but the underfolder also never seems to seat right in the shoulder pocket, I think thats why a lot of people don't like them. I'm indifferent about either, I shoot ok with them but not as well as I do with a fixed or triangle folder. Underfolder wins on looks but the wire folder is more practical if you have a side rail and an optic mounted. I don't really see too many underfolders with a side rail, but I think the WASR has one if I'm not mistaken.

Side folders will always be more comfortable than an underfolder, but UFs are EVIL. And evil is Good.

I got both.

UFs are the shiz for cars and other enclosed spaces as well as general concealment.
I wouldn't say that my Polish is as comfortable as my G is to shoot but the G won't fit in a duffel bag.

I'll second the poster above re AKs being for short people.
My G wears a Nato stock and a buttpad and I think it's still too short.

Hey Zen, I don't see a painted Krink yet, what gives?

Anyway, I have shot underfolding, wire side folding (Romanian), triangle side folding, polymer side folding, and fixed stock AKs in polymer and wood.  The most comfortable cheek weld for me comes in the reverse order of how I just listed them.  Fixed stock wood, fixed polymer, and side folding polymer are very close to each other.  The triangle side folding stocks are also pretty close up there.  Something to be aware of with a metal stock, it will be even more uncomfortable in heat or cold (unless you wrap it).  I have had a triangle side folding AK sitting in direct sunlight with the ambient temp at 110F.  It will not be a pleasant experience when you shoulder the rifle.

Any stock other then fixed, polymer side folding, or triangle side folding is just too uncomfortable for my taste.  Besides, now that I have this as my "go to" rifle, I don't worry to much about whether any of my other AKs fold up.  They can never be as compact as my Krink.

I have numerous examples of both.  I'm slowly warming up to underfolders.  Still prefer fixed stock rifles by a wide margin.

1. It's a relatively thin metal piece instead of a relatively wide wood piece. It's not as comfortable against your cheek.
2. The UF stock bows out to clear the receiver which makes the stock wider than the wood stock. This puts your eye in a different position in relation to the sights, unless you cock your head.
3. As noted previously, the Romanian UF has more drop than the wood stock. IME this results in more muzzle rise when the rifle is fired because the axis of the bore (and the force of the recoil) is above the center of resistance (your shoulder).
Some people do not like UF stocks and find them more difficult to shoot accurately. Your best bet is to try before you buy, if that's possible.

the underfolder beats up my baby cheeks/chin.  i could tell my chin felt a bit sore after shooting a hundred rounds or so.

My chin was sore after shooting the yugo uf but then I wrapped it in paracord and that helps some. I get a good cheekweld on it but like someone else said - the rear of it doesnt seem to fit in my shoulder/chest just right. I have to keep adjusting it since its wider than a normal buttstock. That doesnt bother me enough to get rid of it though - I still enjoy it & shooting w/ the stock folded is fun :).

Ok, I only have experience with fixed stocks and UF AK`s.

I have an M70 that I wrapped the UF stock in paracord. I dont have any problems with a cheek weld, and it is pretty comfortable to shoot. However, like others have mentioned, I do notice that because of the width at the butt of the stock it can be awkward to shoulder. Especially with heavy clothing or body armor on.

I recently picked up a Wasr 10/63 and the fixed stock is very comfortable. I havent decided if I will put a Ace folder, or a Romanian side folder on it. I would love to have a triangle side folder, but I dont have the $ to buy another AK right now.

I havent shot a Romy side folder, but i handled one. It seemed very awkward to get a cheek weld on for me.

It depends. If you plan to shoot alot, get fixed. The underfolder is badass and fun to shoot, but it is not as comfortable. If size/concealment  is an issue, get u/f.

To be practical If you dont need to store your rifle in a small space then get the fixed stock.
I carry my romy G build with romy side folder in the side pouch of my AR15 rifle case and it works out very well but for function and practical use the fixed stock is better. The side folder or pretty nice but it doesnt shoulder as well a the fixed.

If you want it just for the cool factor, thats a valid reason..more power to you but if your going to be shooting the thing alot and dont really have a use for the folder then i think you will be better of with the fixed

Try before you buy.

I sampled a side folder, an under folder and a fixed stock.
The fixed stock was the most practical, comfortable and accurate for
me, but I wanted a nice recoil pad and the ability to adjust the LOP.

My solution was to install a VLTOR 5 position receiver extension
tube and an LMT SOPMOD butt stock with a nice recoil pad
