Sorry, but many people who really give their rifles a work out are quite happy with gas tube mounts, the requirement though is the use of a good quality optic, so far the favorite is an Aimpoint Micro, and those are almost entirely mounted on ultimak tubes. The setup under discussion will be substantially cooler so I think that he will be more than fine with any quality optic. OP you may find the rifle a little more if not to front heavy with the extra weight out there but, try it an see if you even care.... |

As to the weight, it's really not that much, and it helps tame whatever muzzle rise your rifle may have (quite a bit, actually). As to optics cooking, have shot more than a few gas-tube-mounted rifles, including some with the el-cheapo fleabay fake aimpoints. after dumping 4 mags in quick succession (and plenty of smoke from wooden LHG), no optic failure. if you're in a situation where you're using more than 4 mags in quick succession, optics probably aren't going to be your biggest concern. |
I'm running a similar set up on my Saiga. UTG full length quad with Aimpoint Mk3. So far it has proven to be a solid platform with repeatability but I wouldnt use it for long range hits as anything over 100 meters is covered up by the dot (4 MOA). The fore weight has increased of coarse but I found it to be beneficial due to the fact that it counter acts some of the climb.
