I bought my first AK three weeks ago. (WASR 10/63)  Refinished the wood furniture, which turned out real nice - but was not happy with the stock after i got it out to th range.  Too damn short.  Looking at replacing the stock with an adjustable stock.

Questions:

1. Been seeing these recoil reducing stock tubes - needed? worth it?
2. Durability of aluminum over synthetic?
3.TAPCO - far and away the cheapest - but I understand the product is cheaply made.  Please let me know your experiences.

A few I am considering - Please let me know if you have / like:

And for my completely un-biased take on this subject....

but really.. we are not the same TAPCO that earned the bad reputation you speak of.  We have made many many changes in the past couple of years and i feel confident you would not be disappointed in the quality of our stock.  Of course, we all know my opinion, but i thought i would share some reviews from other websites.

(in respect for Area51 Tactical, i'm pasting the reviews here rather than hot linking you to a competitor)

I bought this for my SSR85C-2 Bulgarian AK47..This stock is well made for its purpose..I gave it five stars because i have already cycled thousands of rounds through my ak either by rapid fire or bump firing my gun and this stock has held up pretty good so far without any type of slipage or breakage. You cannot beat a lifetime warranty especially if the product is made for a firearms.Tapco also includes a drill bit and screws for easy attachment to your ak47.

I have tried three different stocks on my MAK-90 since removing the factory thumb hole stock. The Tapco stock was easy to mount, fit great, no custom fitting was needed. I did replace the factory screws with heavier stainless steel torx head screws. The best thing about this stock is that like the stock on my Colt Lightweight AR-15. I can adjust the length of pull when I wearing a pack or vest. Great stock!!! CTD YOU ROCK!!!

Added one of these to my RPK Clone and it works great. Very easy installation. The original stock was to short for me and this one works great for myself and everyone in the family. The RPK with this stock and matching upper and lower guards look and operate great.

As far as the Tapco stocks (T6) I feel if you can break it you would have broken the wood one as well. Also they're customer service these days is second to none. Needed new mag springs for my AK mags (mine where KO'ed) Called and had brand new ones at my door in 48 hours for free. I appreciate them covering their product 100%.

+1 on Tapco.

However If you do not want to go the wood route or the Tapco route.

This is the route I went.

Vltor Buffer tube + Any mil spec adjustable (Magpul ctr in milspec )

Edit: I went up to Cheaperthandirt to check out the CAA tube I did not like it at all.... I like the vltor seems to be the same idea just much more well made. Also has a waterproof storage tube inside.

2. Durability of aluminum over synthetic? i doubt either would cause trouble, weve been using synthetic stocks on ars for years with no problems.
3.TAPCO - far and away the cheapest - but I understand the product is cheaply made.  Please let me know your experiences.  I hate the look of the fixed ones, but my friend has the m4 style ak stock on his AK-308(saiga 308) and it hasnt caused anything but smiles!  Id have to say its good quality...
