I've been into ARs for quite some time. Now that AK availability is opening up I've decided to make the plunge. My dream AK has always been a 7.62 Krink, but I never see them under $1000, which seems a lot. My local shop + AIM + Classic arms has all these options. Which do you think is best for a first timer? This is mostly a range toy + truck gun, so nothing too serious as to use. I think this will likely be my first and last AK - I have a lot of other projects. Thanks for all your input!
1. Arsenal SGL-20 - Stamped Saiga 7.62 $700 2. Bulgarin AK-74 on NDS receiver $500 3. Yugo underfolder 7.62 $550 Also, any ideas which is the best deal? |

since this is your first and last ak, and you have ar's i would stay with 7.62x39, i like the stopping power of a 47, and if you get a 74 its almost the same round as an ar.
Yugo's are nice even though ive never owned one, since their underfolders they are a little less compterble to shoot, why dont you look at some of the side folders that arsenal has to offer. |

From what i understand, the Yugos are not chromed lined. I have seen older ones with pits in the barrel from lack of maintenence.
I had a Brady model, lol, Arsenal milled AK in the 90's and it was the finest craftsmanship I had ever seen on an AK. Even better than my Polytech Legend. I would go with the Arsenal if you want a really nice weapon. If you want a beater, get a Romanian with a chrome lined barrel. I have one and it is a great value. Good luck. BTW you could just save up for a while and get that Krink.... Sorry, my reading comprehension is suffering lately, I thought the Arsenal you were referring to was a milled version. |

For the price I'd god with the 74. The rifle is cheap and so is ammo right now, it wouldn't be hard to stack up 2-4K for a total price of $900-$1200ish
If you are less concerned with overall accuracy and more concerned about barrier penetration go with a 7.62 rifle. Yugo's are great rifles though I wouldn't pick one for myself (not my style of AK), but most people that have them seem to like them alot...and the price is good too. I'm partial to 5.45 because it's an all around effective cartridge. Not as lethal as a 7.62 or as good at penetrating barriers, but you can hit better with it and at longer ranges too. My bugout mentality is based on my experience in the Army...I don't necessarily believe 5.56 or 5.45 is a better round on an absolute scale, but I genuinely feel it's a more practical round. Lighter to carry, more accurate, quicker follow up shots, better engagement ranges...basically all the reasons I was brainwashed into believing the 5.56 is such a great battlefield cartridge.

Im having issues with my yugo underfolder but otherwise I love it, and the folding stock is a huge bonus.
Dont be afraid of the bore and lack of chrome lining - my Century rifle has a very shiny bore after I gave it a good amount of hoppes #9 and a bore brush. I paid $600 for my yugo last weekend. |

If this is really your first and last AK, go with the SGL, either 31 or 20. I love my Yugo, but no matter how well it shoots of how good the fit and finish is, it is still a kit build. The SGLs are as close to a true Russian AK as you can get. The finish sux (at least on my three), but they are well built and more accurate than most.

| I was in the exact same place as you a week ago. I've had a bug for an AK for a while for a truck gun and occasional range beater. I decided the 5.45 was too close to the 5.56 in the AR's, so I stuck with 7.62. I ended up ordering the underfolder Yugo from Classic Arms, it should be here in a day or two. I was tempted to get a .308 Saiga for ammo commonality with a bolt gun and the extra punch, but ended up deciding to go with a standard AK. |
