I have an SLR 107 CR that I want to put some Ironwood grips on. So yesterday after spending a day at the range I was cleaning my rifle and decided to try and remove my gas tube from my grip, kinda to see how that works. The grip comes up and out just fine but the gas tube is in solid! I'm kind of a newbe and I didnt want to bend or scratch anything by not knowing any better, so I figured that I'd ask you guy's. I remember seeing something on u-tube and it just twists out but apparently not. Thank you for your help guys!

Are you trying to get the gas tube out of your rifle, or are you trying to remove the upper handguard from the gas tube?
I use a large adjustable wrench at the rear of the gas tubes opening. I will usually wear a heavy glove, and will hold the upper handguard in place with my left hand tightly (The hand with the glove on), and I'll turn the gas tube with the adjustable wrench with my right hand. You want to turn it completely around so you can pop out the upper handguard. When fitting a wood upper, go at it SLOWLY, and don't force the gas tube, as you can crack the wooden upper. |

I'm trying to remove the gas tube from the upper hand guard. Like I said, I didnt want to force something that I shouldnt force. You have to remove the upper handguard from the tube. I have posted the way that I've been doing it for the last 20 or so years. Let me add one thing. If one already has a wooden upper installed, and the gas tube won't budge, place the tube in the freezer for a few hours. It will then twist right off using the adjustable wrench. FWIW. |

This is how I do it usually, unless I've got one that's REALLY stuck. Then I put the end of the gas tube in a vise on my mill (table vise would work fine) and twist the wood that way. In either case, I'd recommend lubing up the wood with something prior to twisting as these things can and do break. |

Have you guys seen the Ultimak gas tube replacement with rails. Ultimak.com You can co-witness your iron sites with your optics such as an Aimpoint red dot. I just bought one and it works great. nevster
I didn't see anything by the OP about putting on a red dot. From my understanding at least, he wanted to switch the upper handguard from polymer to wood. |
