this may be a dumb question, but i've been wondering, and i guess the only really stupid question is the one you dont ask.

seems most people get 8" groups at 100 yd or better from their AK's - and AK's are said to be capable of 4-6 MOA on average.

i know 1 MOA is 1" at 100 yd., but when you measure the circle of a group is the MOA accuracy based on the radius of the circle or the diameter?

i mean - if you shoot a group that measures 8" in diameter at 100 yd would that be 4 or 8 MOA?

Simply put, you can't.  MOA is actually slightly larger than 1" at 100 yards, but not enough larger that it really matters for all practical purposes.  The standard measuring stick for determining group sizes is to measure between the two farthest apart shots, center to center.  But center to center can be rather subjective, so often you measure outside edge to inside edge, which should give you exactly the center to center measurement.

For practical purposes, if your rifle shoots 2" groups at 100 yards, then you have a 2MOA rifle at 100 yards.
