Thinking about taking my Saiga deer hunting this year out of state, anyone here have any experience using an AK (7.62x39) deer hunting?

Never used my AK for deer hunting. I don't see why not though. As long as you stay legal, in MO you can't have mags over 10rds for deer hunting, I say go for it. My dad on the other had used an sks for deer hunting for many years, worked great

7.62x39 is deadly w/in 100 yards w/ an AK or SKS.  Its a no brainer in South MS, imho.  Check the hunting section, 7.62x39 is damn close to 30-30 w/ the right ammo.

I hunt with a 7.62x39 Saiga.  No mag restriction in WA, which is nice, because I can carry a 20rd mag of HPs to deal with possible bear or cougar issues.

I have a cheap 40mm red dot on one dovetail mount and a Kalinka Optics 3x24mm POSP.  I'll use one or the other depending on the terrain (thick trees and brush here in blacktail country).

Seen it done with a Mini-30. It works. The deer tend to run farther than when shot with a bigger 30 but they still die. I would have collected a deer like that but the Mini-30 is a turd and wouldn't fire. So I shot it with another rifle I had handy.

Caught a moose with my sks.
Was about 200 yrds.
Used sp remingtons.
Also caught caribou a lttle further than that.

A friend of mine used to use a Mini-30 for deer.  The one he shot on the trip we took together dropped where it was hit.  It was about a 60 yard shot.

Yup, just ensure you sight the weapon in with the ammunition you will hunt with. There are some very nice robust 5 round chinese made mags out there that would work well for this...especially if there are mag restrictions. Good luck!
