Today I was offered a trade on a nice Czech VZ 58 for my springfield loaded. I was looking for an AK trade and this came up. Just wondering what you all think about it? I have read some information about the rifle around other sites, but wanted to see if anyone has any first hand expereice.
Thanks, Adam |
| I have four AK's but no VZ 58. They're supposed to be some pretty good rifles but they're not too popular. I think that's based on the fact that the Czechs have never been a real enemy of ours and the VZ 58 rifles were never really seen much of anywhere. They don't have a lot of historical value. I'm sure some of them made their way to some third world country somewhere but they simply don't have the historical value of the Kalashnikov. I wouldn't terribly mind owning one some day, though. But there's plenty of other shit I'd rather have beforehand. I know Atlantic Arms has them currently in stock. |

Springfield what? M1A!? M1A for a vz58? No way. vz58's are really nice but you are getting mugged on that deal. You can pick a used vz58 up for around $800 + or - $50. If you have to sell your M1A do so and then buy a vz58 and 2 cases of ammo for the cost of the M1A. |

But if your giving up M1A1 i will trade you a VEPR for it! |

I don't have any experience with the VZ, but I've seen quite a few in the hands of the Iraqi Police at check points. Those rifles look really nice! |

My friend's VZ58 is more accurate than any AK that I have ever owned. I love shooting it. The only drawback I can see are that mags are not as cheap as surplus AK mags and parts aren't going to be as easy to find.
If it were my rifle, I'd keep it and save up for a VZ if you really want it. I do know from my father that we came up against the VZ58 a few times in Vietnam. That's probably the extent of it though. |

To be fair, Springfield Armory IS labeling some of their rifles "M1A1" on the box now (though not on the receiver). Not quite sure what the number designates, but they've been doing it for at least a year or two now. |
| Hey Fladevmeister: Here's your history lesson for the day. The Czechs were indeed our enemy when they were still "Czechoslovakia" which was a Warsaw Pact nation and the Soviet Union(their big brother) was the "leader of the Pact". Remember the Cold War??? If Western Europe had ever been invaded by the Warsaw Pact armies, the first shots fired would have come out of East Germany into West Germany through the Fulda Gap and out of Czechoslovakia into West Germany and Austria. The VZ 58 would have played a big role there. Just thought you'd like to know. |
