| This may be a dumb question so if it is excuse my ignorance, but I was wondering what it would take to make an AK-47 fire the 7.62 x 25 round? Also how would one go about doing it? With ammo prices where they are at the moment it might be fun to have an AK chambered in that caliber given the fact that you can get over 1200 rounds of it for around $140. |

True, but that would require getting a whole other gun right? I was thinking that since the barrel is already 7.62 could you just modify the mag well to take a smaller mag? I am sure that there would be other modifications that would be involved as well but I do not know what they would be, hence why I started this thread. I did a search and only came up with this:

No you wouldn't need a new rifle. The biggest difference between a rifle the fires 7.62 & one that fires 5.45 is the barrel & the magazines, but you can get away with using 7.62 mags for 5.45 in a pinch.
And the chamber in the 7.62X39 barrel wouldn't work for 7.62X25. You would need a new barrel. I don't know for sure, but I also imagine that the case head diameter may be different too. If it were me, I'd just keep an eye out for a decent priced AK chambered for 5.45 (prices have been coming down). But, an AK in 7.62X25 would be an interesting build. I've always liked the idea of pistol caliber AKs. Good luck, either way you go.

You'd need a whole new rifle to shoot 5.45. Sure, you could build a 5.45 rifle out of a 7.62 one, but you'd be replacing more parts than keeping and it would be a lot cheaper just to buy or build a 5.45 rifle from the ground up.
To build a 7.62x25 rifle you'd need a new barrel, you'd have to make a magazine well for PPSH or whatever mags you decide to use, you'd need to convert the rifle to blowback operation (weld a 5.45 bolt to the carrier and remove locking lugs), mount the front sight to the new barrel...again you'd basically be building a whole new rifle. |

Internally, I have no idea. Also, the OP in the AKFiles thread mentions that he based off of some builds done by a member called azhonkey. He also posted this url: http://www.prexis.com/sten/homebuilder/index.php?topic=130.0 I'm not a member there, so I have no idea what is there. Edit: Is that better?
