Hey all,

Quick question I was showing my new Ak to my father and he grabbed the rear sight and was moving it back and forth all the way to the gas tube ––- would that cause any damage to the rear sight?  I mean i know the rear sight is supposed to move (you set the elevation)  but I've never seen anyway manually lift the rear sight and flip it back and forth. Thanks all!

Mine does that, and all of them I've ever seen do it too.

Even the sight leaf on my K31 does that. No worries.

Thanks good to know!

Like Emegbers said, you're fine.  In fact, the rear sight on the RPK-type rifles have the elevation tick marks also on the bottom side of the sight so it can be flipped-up to have the elevation set without the gunner having to look over the top of it.

The manual talks about rear sight inspection. If it passes those tests it's GTG. BSW

Thanks its a brand new rifle from Arsenal (107F) and I have yet to really check it out other than a basic function test.  I'll go through the inspection outlined in the manual and make sure its GTG before I head off to the range (one of these days!).  Thanks again!

Another question how are you supposed to clean the barrel w/o messing up the crown ––- are you really supposed to use part of the combination tool to make sure the rod is centered (think I read that somewhere before)?  The cleaning rod that came w/ my rifle sucks ––- I guess I will use the one that came w/ my general gun cleaning kit (three pieces and screws together).

I usually use a pull-thru from a AK pocket kit and clean chamber to muzzle. The rod will wear against the crown, which won't help accuracy. I try to only clean from the muzzle if I'm using a solid rod with a crown protector. The rod has other uses too: cleaning the gas tube, roasting meat...

Is this what you consider a pull-thru –– should I use this?

If your concerned that a cleaning rod moving at 2 inches per second will do more damage to the chrome lined barrel than a bullet moving 2300+ fps followed immediately by hot gas under 40K psi, use the cap on the cleaning kit. Used properly, it will keep the rod away from the bore.
What is wrong with the cleaning rod?

I was thinking more like the ones here https://www.mainemilitary.com/productcart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=70&idproduct=2200

$3 for a whole kit vs $20 for the bore snake and you can replace the brush when it wears out.

The Arsenal AKs with the 24mm FSBs can't use the cap to protect the crown as the rifle is just too big at the muzzle. I've had firearms before with crowns that were damaged by cleaning (German P6 pistol) that were very inaccurate. Cutting a new crown fixed the problem, but why make trouble? BSW
