Got together with a couple of friends and had fun at the range today.

Since neither of them had fired AK's before we started off with the easy to shoot SLR105 and eventually moved on to the NDM86. They had a great first time shooting combloc rifles.
For me probably the funnest part of the day was breaking out the NSPU and seeing what it could do. It's a great scope but during the middle part of firing it had some issues with cutting out completely (reticule and all) after each shot. I spent some time fiddling with the AA batteries and after a bit it settled down and seemed to run just fine, apart from the sun which decided to come out in force right at the end. The picture during daylight is grainy and hard to adjust for clarity but you can definately make out the paper targets at 100 yard, so I was able to get a rough zero on it. Probably not good enough to engage targets at night but close enough for plinking.

I think the two of them enjoyed the S12 most of all and had a lot of good things to say about it. One point is that like most others, my S12 like crap with low brass ammo. I explained before they shot it that they would have to manually eject each empty and that worked well enough for them. Also fired about 20 rounds of remington 2 3/4" 00 buck along with some range bought 3" magnum rounds and the S12 ran like a scalded ass monkey. No FTE and the recoil was effin awesome :)

My PK-AS actually popped in two near the back due to the recoil of the S12, but it was easily fixed in classic communist fashion with a hammer and a front sight adjustment tool to pop it all back into place. I suspect that the elevation screw had come loose and allowed the elevation shaft to come out, getting it back in couldn't be done by hand because of the tight tolerances. After I reseated the elevation screw I didn't have any more problems...good old ruskie optics

And if you've ever wondered what it looks like to shoot a Dragunov with an NSPU mounted just scroll down.

Very cool. How much do dragunovs run these days? Even available?

Great stuff!  I can so picture rifles not set-up right in that stand just falling over and plopping into that water.

Is that the American Shooting Center in George Bush Park in Houston? It sure looks like it, that's where I taught my son to shoot after they closed down SW Rifle Range, which was 1.5 miles from my house in Sugar Land. I miss those days and those pics make me homesick.

I hate being an ex-pat Texan!

It looks a bit wetter than the last time I was there, around three weeks ago. Lately I have been wearing my muck shoes and carrying an extra pair of sneakers for afterwards.

Got to love a 600 yard range though.

As suspected, yes that is indeed ASC out at Bush park. I think it's the best range I've been to in Houston and while not perfect, its run pretty well. No rapid fire is kind of a bummer but then again considering the volume of people and the likelyhood of an idiot doing something stupid I'm ok with that.

NDM86's run about 4k+ these days for 7.62x54r, .308's around 3k. The .308's do shoot though, so for 3k at least you will have .308 accuracy...my old one would routinely hit 1 MOA and best group was .74" at 100 yards with Winchester 168gr ballistic silvertip.

I'm glad I bought 54R a ways back before things got really crazy, not sure I'd want to drop that much on one now.

Meh, I probably would anyway, it's my all time favorite rifle

Rube, you need to post a range report of that Krink!
