I went to my first multigun match today and decided to take my AK over my AR because I've had my AK for a year and my AR for only a week and a half. I also knew that if I used an AK, I could do miserably and could blame the inferior accuracy, recoil, and ergonomics of the rifle.
The weather was awful, as it apparently likes to snow in March here in Indiana; only six shooters showed up. As I expected, I was the only person to show up with an AK and a pump shotgun, a 5+1 capacity Mossberg 500 dressed in wood that had always been a dove gun. Only one person other than me was shooting limited. Everyone else had optics on their rifles. The other guy shooting limited had a Benelli M2 with a tube extension that allowed him 8+1 shots. I used my not-so-tactical trap/skeet shell bag for my shotgun shells and my tactical rear pocket for my AK mags. Three of us used production guns; I used my Sig P226 (Oh, there wasn't a single Glock at the match Man, was it fun to run the AK. I had a type 1 from using hollow point ammo. Luckily, I've drilled myself to do a chamber check when my AK doesn't fire. I got to do my super-cool-uber-tactical Spetsnaz reload as well. Shotgun was a blast too, especially having to rack the slide after each shot while the other guys could just pull the trigger as fast as they can. Some guys shot so fast that they missed everything and practically had to reload and start over. The pistol stage was also weird, since I had to do a 'gangsta' hold with my left hand to shoot around a barrier. One of the race gun guys went so fast that he pretty much made C's on every target, so I made 3rd on that stage. I made 4th overall with 1st in Limited (of 2). But that also means I beat out a Tactical guy. Take that AR guys who say, "The AK is an inferior weapon platform."

Very important no matter what platform you are running to check the bolt when the rifle FTF!!!
Only takes a 1/10 of a second and will save you time in the end. Did you run your Sig? How do you like going from dbl action to single action? Was your first shot out of the Sig a little High? |

It takes a little longer to get a smooth trigger pull, but I can do it and get the round on POA (at close distances anyway). |

AzNoob,
I do not see the AK as a disadvantage as long as you know its strengths and its weakness. The AR has more attributes than an AK,No debate here ,but Iron Clad Reliability atleast in my limited humble experience is not one of them. Install a Forward mounted Quality Red dot sight on a Ultimak and you will see whats up. |

Personally, I think the AK's weaknesses outweigh its strengths in a competition environment. I was not in an adverse environment that would have given me the reliability advantage over the AR. That said, I still love my AK. |
