| I recently got a K-Var furniture set and installed it with no problem. However, and this is my question...the bottom hand guard moves at the front. When I say move I mean it moves up and down in the retainer. It almost feels like it is using the cleaning rod like a spring. Very odd to me since I have only ever used wood. Any ideas? |

Hello HercMech,
I recently experienced the same issue with my AKM and a new Bulgarian plum stock set. Although they state that these stock sets will fit all stamped AK's, they do not mention that the AK and AKM have a different style of lower handguard retainer. Namely, it does not have the AK74 style "lip" at the top of each side to keep the handguards front secure. Our AK/AKM retainers are "open", and because of this, the only thing keeping the lower handguard from completely bumping up to the gas tube is the tension from the cleaning rod. I've been stumped on how to remedy this. I've tried using JB Weld (small drops) at different spots, welding metal to metal, but it does not hold after firing 50-100 rounds. Aside from drilling a few screws (which is NOT a solution), the only other thing is to slip the lower metal extension of the handguard so it sits flush outside of the retainer. This will keep the handguard from any upward movement, and the upper part will still fit inside the retainer. A little unsightly seeing this "stick out", but it's hardly noticeable and will allow you to continue using this great stock. Does anybody have any other practical solutions to this? There must be many people using these stocks on AK/AKM builds with older style retainers. By the way, my first post! This board is great. Serb |
