What is "key holing" when talking about an ak74.

It's when the bullet goes through the target sideways.

Key holing has nothing to do specifically with AK-74s.

I hear it alot when talking about 74s though and does anyone know how it is formed?

A Tantal is not an AK-74. Key holing has only been reported from CAI built Tantals that use a US made barrel.

oh alright but how is it formed a bad barrel twist or something?

Usually it is because the barrel twist isn't fast enough to fully stabilize the bullet.  I'm not sure if that is the case with tantals or not.

CAI reportedly used barrels bored and rifled to .223 specs.

key holes in general are normally only refered to as being a secondary impact after the round has already went through tissue and exited, then hits another object sideways but i think your talking about a round that just wasnt fired right from the barrel =/ i have never heard of this happening but im sure its possable if the barrel specs are off

Keyholing is the term normally used when a bullet strikes the first target sideways. Not after it has already struck the target. A bullet yawing is desired once it's hit the target.

I had a century tantal and at 40 yards the target looked like you shot the rounds at it with a slingshot. Took the p.o.s. back. If you get a 5.45 rifle make sure it has a original chrome-lined barrel and save yourself the hassle.

Just like the others say:

The Key holing is only an issue with US made barrel's on Tantal CAI guns.

However I have heard of some of the S&W 5.45 uppers key holing.

Best to stick with original foreign AK74/Tantal barrels.

The deal with the Tantals is that they used .224" bores instead of .221" bores.

This causes the bullets to not stabilize properly and to "keyhole" - or hit the target sideways.
