I'm looking to buy my first AK47 I dont know much but i see alot of WASR hate flying around. What makes them different from any other AK? |
Your asking for the grammer Nazis. I think everyone is spoiled with really good looking(expensive) Ak's, and WASR'S dont look nearly as good. As long as function is perfect and thiers no defects WASR's are just fine. With the Hell a WAR would put Ak's through they will all end up looking beat up anyways. |
Yeah, I'm a smartass. ![]() What that guy said in red pretty much covers it. You really need to look a WASR over before buying one. They've been had with every problem imaginable, but a thorough inspection should reveal 90% of the problems that could potentially come up. Look at every part and make sure it's put on straight and made properly. Bring some mags and make sure they don't flop all over and make sure you don't have to fight them to get them in and out. A couple months ago I almost bought an AES-10B (which is basically an RPK WASR) with the rear sight ground paper thin at one end where the windage knob was and it rattled back and forth. I'm sure it held zero fine . It also had a substantially canted front sight. It just goes to show that anything could be wrong so look it over thoroughly. If everything is ok, chances are the rifle will shoot fine and last a lifetime. That said, almost all of the WASRs I've seen have had absolutely shitty rivet work. |

From what I'v read there used to be some serious quality issue with WASRs when they were put back together. These days most of the guys who have 10/63 are giving mostly positive reviews. However, it is probably best to buy one that you can hand inspect first so you can verify certain aspects of the build were done correctly. I have a 10/63 and I am happy with it. It's exactly what you would expect to find in a weapons cache of a peasant army. Of course, if you can afford to drop an extra $100 the Yugos are nicer rifles. |

I've had a WASR-2 for about a year, and about 900 rounds of surplus ammo, 2steel and two plastic mags, all work fine. The front sight was straight too. Stock, their wood is crappy as hell. I bought mine to convert into a custom bullpup anyways so did not care one bit though. The thing to look for is the canted front sight. This too can be fixed though, so if you find a cheap one, they are good. |
What do you mean by "reinforce the magwell"? Did you add dimples or something? I've never heard of anything like that. |

Chris i think he was refering to a JB weld fix maybe This may be your fix for the Rifle OP, HERE I have owned 2 WASRs, the 1st had a few issues and the 2nd was pure trash. 2nd showed no signs of problems until about 300-400rds thru her. Both were sold into Bondage |

WASR was my first. I have a converted Saiga now too. The WASR performs just as well as the Saiga. Well put together and looks good after some clean up work and refinished wood. I think the WASR hate comes from the guys who spend $600 to $1000 on an AK, and you spent $350 on one that shoots pretty much the same! |

Most WASR's aren't much in the cosmetic department, and a lot of them suffer from poor assembly. However, as others have said, a WASR that wasn't assembled by a monkey will be reliable, and you can make a WASR look very nice with a little work. Why people worry so much about the aesthetics on an AK (the ultimate "function before form" rifle) is beyond me. Yeah, a nice finish and quality wood looks nice, but in some ways it also looks out of place on an AK, IMHO. |
| There's nothing wrong with them, but if you put every manufacturer and every model of AK in order according to quality, the WASR would be at the bottom. That doesn't mean it won't shoot or that you won't like it. It just means it is the lowest quality AK out there. Simple as that. |

With any given item you can buy, there is always an element of snobbery with some people. And a few that have just had a bad experience and project that experience onto every other similar item. I have owned a good number of AKs including a few WASRs. I've never had a problem with any of them. |
| i must have been one of those people then who got an absolutely shitty WASR out of the box which being my first AK, I of course overpaid for. All my other AKs, especially the last two (1 polish underfolder and 1 romanian CUR-2 )were sports cars compared to that WASR, and I paid less for each of them then I did for the WASR. |

. There are many nicer Kalashnikovs out there, but you'll pay.
