I am thinking about modding out one of my AK's. I have  WASR-10/63 and a Yugo M70B1 that are the candidates. I would really rather keep the Yugo original look and mod the WASR. But would be putting expensive furniture, accessory rails and optics on a WASR be like "putting a silk hat on a pig"?  Tell me what you think and why?

Depends on what you're planning on doing.

If you had the M70 professionally finished in gunkote and bought a set of Ironwood Designs hardwood furniture you'd have an absolutely beautiful AK and worth every penny. Case in point:

(that one isn't mine)

On the other hand if you're looking to go tactical, neither is particularly suited to that task. The Yugo would require Yugo-only stuff and the WASR isn't worth spending a bunch of money on to upgrade.

Only thing i would dare add to a m70ab1 is an Ultimak.

WASR-10 lets keep it cheap and functional.
1.UTG Rail
2.Tapco T6 stock
3.Grips
4.Muzzle  i would use the 74 to keep cheap or Jtac for best results.
5.ForeGrip

Optics = depend on what your really using it for....... I like Aimpoint and Trijicon, but they cost as much as your Rifle.  Check the Budget section of the EE optics.

Add a light and your good

Edit: Finish = Moly Resin  Choose or mix your colors

Excellent advice....
The Ak is Ak - it is the unTacti-"cool" rifle

I'll make my tired old comment. Put the money into ammo and learn to shoot the damned thing as if it were part of you.

It's your money, piss it away however you wish. Show us pictures when you get done.

I like your thinking, the WASR is going to be the hobby gun. Not sure if I want the collapsible or a folding stock. And I think I am going to go for the Vortex Red Dot.
