I have a Romi G kit built on an Armory receiver with a Polish underfold stock. Parkerized finish. If I hold the rifle in the normal position the mag won't release, as soon as I tilt the rifle sideways it works fine. This is a new build, is the mag release just needing to be worn in?

Any mag wobble?

Insert and remove the mag multiple times the normal way.
Look at the under side locking Tab on the back of the Mag. (where the Catch hits it)
Your looking for any "gouges" or area where finish is being removed more on it.
That is most likely the part of the mag catch you need to file a little..
I did this with my Henderson build G Rifle.
Take your time and keep trying the mags..
Also make sure the mags you are using were not WESCOGfucked by someone who didn't want to file on their rifle and decided to file each mag instead..

No wobble. Tight as can be. Will do on the mag check.

I agree on checking it out to find where it's hanging up. From what you descibe in having to tilt it sideways to get it to release I'm thinking a small burr or piece of matel may have gotten somewhere it shouldn't be. Does the mag catch lever work smoothly when there is no mag in the gun ?? Like custom x said try multiple mags and look for finish wear to diagnose the problem. I've had a few mags that had issues and looked perfect, must've been Monday mags Good Luck with it.

Had something like this on one of mine.  There was a "burr" on one side of the mag release and it would dig into the mag. It then took a screwdriver to pry on the release lever to get the mag out.  About 2 min with a jewelers file an it was g.t.g.

Mag release is smooth when empty and when sideways. Maybe it was a gangsta gat at one point?? Will be checking for burrs.

Had that on the 1st one I built. Cut a long thin pc of sandpaper threaded it over the top of the mag release pulled it back and forth a couple times while checking mags cured the problem.

My problem was the steel mag the HDI AK came with. It is a bit fatter than my other mags. I thought it was the mag release but Bulgarian Waffles and Hungarian steel mags are good to go. I just sand it a bit and viola! I cured the problem.

Exactly..
Make your rifle work with the mags, not the other way around.
What if you get some new mags and forget to "fix" them.
Then an unlikely SHTF goes down, what happens when you cant emergency reload and you don't have a side arm??
Just a very hypothetical situation.

IMO its better to make the rifle work with all mags than have a certain 10 that will work with your rifle...

In my case I have 6 30rd Bulgarian Waffles, 4 30rd Hungarian steel mags, 1 20rd Hungarian mag and 1 30rd I do not know were it is from mag that came with my HDI that was a bit wide which I had to sand the right side a bit. All the other magazines fit with no problems. If the majority of my mags had the same problem I would have worked the rifle and not the mags. I like to take care of any problems with my firearms immediately, because I value my life and my family. Take care guys
