So, my WASR's finish has seen better days. It's not really bad, but some parts are a little worn down and below the selector almost down to bare metal.

I was planning on sending it out to get refinished in Gun Kote or something of the sort. Then I thought about the money it was going to cost.

Should I refinish, or use the money for ammo, mags, etc?

Since I'm a bit of a perfectionist, it bothers me that there are some blemishes on the finish, but I only have two mags and barely any ammo. I'm limited on my funds so I have to decide.

What do you guys think?

Refinish it yourself and spend the difference on mags and ammo. Brownell's GunKote and Alumnahyde finishes are easy to use and pretty tough.

I am so not the kind of guy who would feel comfortable doing that type of job myself. I guess I could, but I don't really have a place that I could work. I'm going to have trouble finding a place to finish the Ironwood stock set I ordered.

I am going to go with mags and ammo. Now I have to look for some deals.

Thanks to those who posted.

Your AK could care less what it looks like, get yourself some mags and as much ammo as you can. I had a WASR that was uglier than a home made mud fence, I wiped it down with thinner to clean the dirt and oil so new paint would stick, had at it with a can of black hi temperature bbq grill paint you can buy at any hardware store, and it looked great for a few years till I traded it off on a better rifle. I think I had a whole 5 bucks in refinishing it and it looked way better than when it was new.

Just steelwool it to give it character. Buy Ammo and Mags.

I was considering hi-temp paint, but my brother said I would have to remove the entire finish from the metal or the paint would not stick. He redid an SKS and he said the paint started peeling the next day, so he had to take it to bare metal. I guess it was a job for him, because he wouldn't refinish my AK when I asked him.

I did a high temp paint on mine after only a good cleaning in brake cleaner and it has held up fine. I did however not touch it for 2 weeks just to be sure it cured.

It's a WASR. If it didn't look like it was dragged through the mud then it ain't right.

Yeah but if you refinish the wood and the metal, even with high temp paint I bet somebody on GB will buy it for $200 bucks more than it's worth.

I redid the wood on my WASR10 and sold it for about a hundred more than I paid for it minus the like 8 dollar can of finish I bought.

Just shoot it. Its an AK, a WASR at that. If you really want the finish redone, take some time online and research what you want an do it yourself; repark, paint, whatever, nothing is really to difficult once you put your mind to it.
