How hard would it be, if it is even possible, to go from a regular stock to a folder? What are the options here. I really like the look of the triangle stock and the underfolders, but dont know what is possible. Any help is appreciated.

Foreign triangle and underfolding stocks require a whole different set of holes drilled in the receiver and a different rear "trunnion" than a fixed stock.  Basically, if you already have a fixed stock AK, you can't convert it to either one without completely demilling the rifle and scraping the receiver.

Romanian wire side folding stocks use the exact same fixed stock rear "trunnion" though.  All you have to do is unscrew the wood stock and then screw the Romanian side folder in.

Go with the Romy wire folder, simple, easy and durable. Also probably the cheapest way to go.

But as with anything there's a price. Rifles with the wire folder are harder to shoot with accuracy than rifles with a fixed stock or the triangle style folder.

I will agree with you on the accuracy of the romy wire folder vs the triangle folder.I wasn't sure the OP was looking for accuracy when he said he liked the" look of the underfolder".

Well, I would rather not sacrifice accuracy for looks, thats just dumb

my ak has an underfolder on it.
still hold 5 inch groups with open sights at 100 yards.
good enough for an ak.

It can be done but requires welding up the some existing holes on the receiver and making other holes.   Certainly a time-consuming process and can be a bit more costly.  I had a Romanian full-stock rifle converted to an underfolder a while back and it was labor-intensive.  As the guys said, you'll need the correct rear trunnion for it to even work.

It's probably wiser to just purchase the correct receiver you need, the underfolding stock set/side-folding stock set, then go from there.  Otherwise, a very simple way to enjoy a "folding" rifle stock would be as the others said and get an East German or Romanian side-folder.

There may be legal issues. If the rifle was imported as a complete rifle, the serial number may be on the trunnion. If you add a complete US made receiver, the serial number is on the sheet metal. Combine the two and you have a rifle with two serial numbers. That's a no no in the eyes of the gov't.

And before someone asks about kit builds, let me remind you that the number on the trunnion was not recorded when it was imported. It wasn't a rifle, so that number is not a serial number.

I like the Romanian wire side-folder on my SAR, like the Tapco (composite) side folder on my MAK, and like the ACE folder on my Maadi.

The ACE is the most expensive AND the most solid. Very nice.

The TAPCO folder is perfectly serviceable and fine for range trips, truck gun etc - not as solid and I trust it less for hard use.

The Romanian wire folder is right between those two - medium price, medium stability, but very durable.
