I have always been partial to ARs but with a possible assault weapons ban in the future I'm considering buying an AK. I will be honest and say I don't know crap about them. What are the good makes out there and key features to look for? From my research it would seem that Arsenal is the top AK manufacture in the industry right now but like I said I don"t know crap. I'm not looking for anything super nice, I just want a rifle that will provide years of reliable service for a good price. thanks for the valuable input.

Browse through the 10-11 pages of this AK forum for info.

With regard to factory built AK's, most would agree that you should go with an Arsenal or a Vector if you want a quality AK, yet there is some other good stuff out there as well. Atlantic Firearms web site carries a fairly good selection of AK's, including Vector.

If you want cheap then I'd say find a SAR 1 or SAR 2.

+1; SAR rifles are excellent starters and a good value. Saigas are a very good value too, if you convert them yourself; higher quality but neutered and requiring evilcation. Also a good choice would be a ban-era Arsenal SLR-95 or SA-93 if you want a milled receiver.

I was in the same boat your are in.  I ended up picking up a Century arms yugo at a local gun show for $450 out the door.  Alot of people bash century however my rifle shoots great and it has a 1.6mm receiver which is better then most high dollar AK's.  I did alot of research and heard good things about Vector and Lancaster AK's too.  You should be able to pick one of them up for alittle under $600.  I checked out the Arsenals and they are nice but If I was gonna spend that much money I would get another AR.  Again, I'm happy with my yugo and if you can't find one local then check out classicarms.  They still a have a few fixed stock models for $449.  You can check out pics of my rifle in the yugo section under this thread-----(my first AK..How'd I do?)

For what your looking for I think a yugo will be a happy median between the cheap romainians and the high dollar Arsenals.
