If you buy a Saiga that is already half converted w/ the pistol grip what does it
take to convert the front end to look like a real AK?  Without the funky long
handguard and different FSB???  How much cash would it take??

Thanks,

T

Depend on which caliber.

7.62x39 and 223- you can press off the FSB and gasblock.  Use a standard lower handguard retainer (Grind out the splines).  Press the gasblock and FSB of your choice on.
You will also need a standard gas tube, some fitting required.

everything else- you are going to need something different.

I made a clamp on lower handguard retainer for my out of a 3/4" two piece collar clamp and a chunk of an AMD-65 retainer.

You need a handguard retainer (K-VAR part # AK-338), handguards (K-VAR part # AK-022BUS & AK-144BUS), gas tube (K-VAR part # AK-080EG), gas chamber (K-VAR part # AK-334), 24mm threaded front sight block (K-VAR part # AK-167B), muzzle brake (K-VAR part # K-140B). Send to smith and have installed or do it yourself if you have a press. Probably $350-$400 all said and done.

Ouch!  Thats alot of coin yet for a rifle that costs over $500 bucks to start out.
I hoped it might be less.  You might as well just buy a normal AK and be done.

BB is giving you the deluxe, do everything to the max way.

So far the front end conversion on my 223 is something like this:

Used K-var handguards $30 shipped from the EE

Romanian lower handguard retainer  $12 shipped EE

gas tube $12 EE

Maadi FSB $15 EE (Gets me the cleaning rod retainer)
I'll need to drill it for the FH retainer pin though.

I'm keeping the stock gasblock, though I might add material for a cleaning rod guide.

Thread the barrel myself to 14x1 LH.

I'm probably going to skip the bayo lug on this one.

But yeah,  If you want a military style AK in 7.62x39 then you probably are better off buying a Vector or something.

I like Saigas because I can get 223, 308 and 12 gauge.

For 7.62x39 I'm doing parts kits.

Yeah, what I posted was the "route to AK100 right now" approach using in stock, new parts. If you look for stuff here/there online you can do it cheaper; also, you can buy an AK74 parts kit, take the parts off you need and sell the rest.
