I have no experience with AK type rifles but do have limited AR experience. I live in New York where we still have an assault rifle ban. All the old Federal ban rules apply here. At any rate, I saw what I believe is a SLR 106FR ban style AK in a gun store for either 799 or 899 (it was a while ago). This was new in box. I didn't pay attention to the model number at the time but I pretty sure it was a stamped receiver ban style gun in 223 (or 5.56, but i think it was labeled 223). Looking at Arsenal's website the picture of the 106FR matches what i saw, as does the description. I believe that this gun is now discontinued (like every other gun on their website). I've done a bit of board searching and reading but had two questions. First, is $799 a fair price for that gun? Second, i'm pretty sure that the rifle's magwell supports double stack mags, but he gun itself comes with a ban era 10 round mag. I've read that Bulgarian mags fit best into Bulgarian AKs. Are pre-ban 223 Bulgarian mags available on the market? Thanks. |

The gun i saw in the store was a 223 New York ban compliant gun. I was considering it as I already stock 5.56 and 223. However, if pre-ban 223 mags aren't available which fit the gun then I don't think that it would be worth while for me to buy an AK in 223, common ammo or not. Thanks for your replies. |

Actually plenty of Pre-ban magazines fit that rifle. All of the Bulgarian .223 Waffle magazines are legal since Arsenal brought in tons of them prior to the ban in 94. If you find AK 74 magazines these will function fine. You simply add a Robarms .223 follower and dremel about a 1/4" area on each side of the feed lips since the .223 has a longer shoulder than 5.45x39. Basically if you buy a 105 in 5.45x39 you'll have to use pre-ban AK 74 magazines anyway. Since you have to get these anyway you might as well get the rifle in the caliber that you want which is 5.56NATO. There are even some Pre-ban Bulgarian Waffles floating around which is what I used in my Pre-ban Bulgarian 5.56 rifle before the ban sunset. Check around on the New York Hometown forum and there are plenty of guys that can help you address this. RR |
