I don't need one, I just want one, but do to my old eyes, it will need a receiver sight not the standard version. A good, basic version just a better rear sight.

I'll stand back now and let you guys make your suggestions.

I'd like the standard AK-47 clone with wood furniture.  Want to get one in the Summer before the elections, juuuuuuuuuuuuuuut in case.

It depends on what your spending level is and what your priorities are.

You can buy a Romanian WASR or a SAR-1 (used), both generally have a side rail on the receiver, which you can mount a scope on. The WASR is probably the lowest cost AK clone at around $300-350 and does everything the more expensive ones do.

If you want a pristine finish you can double or triple the cost you pay and get something nicer looking like a VEPR. These function just like the cheaper ones, but not necessarily better in my experience.

Here's one of my SAR-1 AK's with a POSP scope attached to the side rail. This is the same setup the WASR would have if it has a side rail:

I am in the same situation. Want to get one while you still can. I've had an AR15 for several years and like it but want to get an AK. I see a couple at Atlantic Firearms, one is the ST2000 and the other a Russian Red which I really like. Anyone have any knowledge of these 2 please pass it on. Thanks !!

Years ago I outfitted my SKS Para with a Williams ghost ring or peep sight, replaced the the original rear sight. Drilled it out a bit. Works pretty well as an open sight for my 50+ eyes. I plan to go this route with my AK's too if available, as I can hardly see the slot in their rear blades. Optics of some sort are always nice, but I still want useable open sights too.

I saw a very nice set up at Knob Creek.  It is a top cover with a low full length rail that attached to the rear sight block.  It had an HK drum sight on the back of it.  A very nice set-up.  I don't know who was making it, It was installed on a pistol.  I hope to get one when I go this year.  By adding a low rail to a top cover you could make about the same thing.  It would work on any ak.
