How do I take the damn handguards off. I want to refinish them, but I have no idea how to separate the wood from the metal.

The lower one is ez: flip the little lever on front retainer forward, slide retainer toward muzzle, remove HG. The top one on gas tube: put screw driver in the rear slot of the gas tube. Twist HG around gas tube 180 degree. Pull HG out. However, some HG could be very stubborn, and ther is allways risk to crack upper HG while twisting it.

Good luck!

The first step is to strip the rifle down like you are going to clean it.The bolt  and carrier group must be removed or the hand guards won't come off. After removing the bolt group their is a little lever on the right side up near the front sight.Pull the lever up to about the 11:00 o'clock position. This will allow you to remove the gas tube and upper hand guard. The upper guard is a U shape and is supposed to twist out of the retainer. Some of them are easy and some will crack before they come out so be careful. The lower guard is easier, flip the lever up on the front retainer and move it forward releasing the guard.Again some fit very tight and some don't.Good luck.

Hold the rear of the gas tube with a vise or adjustable wrench. Twist the wood with your hand carefully, it should twist right off.As said above, make sure you field strip your rifle and remove the cleaning rod first.

And hold the top hg bit in a shop rag to guard the hand against the tube's retaining edges. Pre-lube won't hurt either.

Cool. Got em off. Any tips for refinishing these? Do all the metal parts need to come off the wood before sanding and staining??
