Does the shepards hook need to go under the trigger pin ? The reason I ask is mine sits on top - and I'm having trouble with my selector pin staying in place.

Thanks for any help

Yes. Both pins need the hook wire to put pressure on them, inside the groove. This keeps the pins in place.

... and, dump the hook. Get E clips, or better yet get the Red Star Arms retainer (about $12 each).

If you are a cheap bastard with a lot of AKs, buy one, trace it, and then duplicate it. If you have a CNC laser cutter, even better . Don't sell them though because then you would no be a cheap bastard, but an asshole thief, since it's a great and original idea, and they have a patent on it.

Thanks for the info-

I was just reading about the replacement for the S.hook. Does the red star retainer really make that big a difference ? I'm going to buy one....

It's literally night and day.

With the hook, you fish, feed, scratch, and curse. Also, with the hook, small variances in the different receivers can make it easier or harder to get the hook in place.

With the RSA retainer, it literally takes 5 seconds to lock down the pins, and you could do it in the dark and drunk.

Usual disclaimers: Don't mess with guns while drinking, and don't steal intellectual property from innovative gun parts manufacturers.

Yours is the Chinese design, which is different than most. IIRC it goes over the trigger pin and under the hammer pin.

See my IM.

I managed to get the #@!$%^&* shepard's hook back in place on my Yugo M70AB2 after replacing the CAI trigger group with a Tapco G2 FGC. Do I need to replace the shepard's hook as a matter of course because it'll break, or is it something I can do later?

I am a BIG CHEAP BASTARD (when it comes to things like that retaining wire). Anyway, get yourself Unistrut Nut (if you familiar with commertial building wiring / construction, Unistrut is a an extrusion channel used to mount wire conduits to building walls, etc.) That nut has a spring. Look for chome plated spring type. The spring itself is wery stong, yet could be easily formed. Get one, straiten it and bend one end over receiver central support rivet with enough length to form long semi-circular hook, and hang over to about 1". Route the long end under hammer pin and over trigger pin. Cut just short to clear selector. I had build several AK's using this method, not a single failure, easy to install / remove and close to original design.

You'll be fine. The hook is a PITA, but it won't break.
FWIW, I found that e-clips don't work well because the pins are metric (except for the custom made, slightly longer fcg pins I bought off this board a couple of years ago ) and the e-clips are US standard.
YMMV

I was a big fan of the eclip and on one gun once it got over 1000 rds (some where between 1000 -1300 rds) the trigger one came loose. so replaced it then the hammer one came loose. Replaced it and they both became loose after a while. Keep replacing and still problems.

Then had very similar results with another one also. So orderd SH and have never had a problem with any rifle/pistol sense.

The trick to installing and uninstalling is this using a gun vice (I use the cheap one from walmart $25.00. They are great for building and cleaning and also make the trigger install much easier.

Place in vice and push the barrel against the wall or end of bench so it won't move forward. Now you can use both hands to install.

Put the end of the SH in a needlenose pliers (or can hold in hand) and slide in place with the other hand pushing down to slip under hammer pin. Once in place but not all the way in place a screw driver on the end and tap in place with a rubberor plastic hammer.

The SH is just like the Bulgarian example in the picture.

This isn't my picture and wish I could give credit to who ever made it.

E-clips loosen and fall off at the worst times, like right before the yearly rabbit hunt. I've had to replace mine w/ scrounged staples cut in two and wound around the pivot pins.

Just get the shepherds crook in place the first time and then leave it there. I use a dental tool looking device ( like a bic pen w/ a hook on one end and an "L" shape on the other) to lift, or push down as the situation requires, the  wire as I push the pins out with the other hand. No worries.

ETA:

A buddy gave me this one. I'd love to find another.
