Hi all- I broke down and got a Romanian side folder for my 84S preban and after fitting it into the reciever (went great) I see that the holes dont line up for the screws ...have Since the 84S is a preban I really dont know what to do here.. I dont want to ruin the rifles rear trunnion and all but what the hell should I do here to get it to fit? I live in NY so my only option for a folder is to use a preban as a donor to get what I want (I sure the hell dont want an underfolder). Whats the SOP for a chicom install of a romy side folder? |

All I have seen or read is this: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=4&f=64&t=101438 Not encouraging... The Romy side folder I bought from APEX fits my WASRs nicely (perfectly). |

hinking.gif I guess I have a decision to make here.. I hate to "ruin" a pre-ban but Im in NY and this 84S is my primary weapon for defense and is all workhorse and no safe-queen.. I just dont want anything bubbafied in the end and I want it clean looking.. One other option is to leave it as a solid stock but I want something compact and vehicle friendly.. Folder is a must and not for the coolio factor |
I would only operate on the folding stock, if I were you. I wouldn't ruin the rifle - no way. Can you not line one hole up and drill/tap the folding stock base for the other one? Drilling and tapping is easy - I do it all the time, and you can get taps and matching drill bits at any home improvement megastore (Lowe's, Home Depot, etc.). |

Not sure if this will work but how about getting an ACE adapter and stock? I put one on a milled post-ban and it's very solid and folds very nicely. I did NOT have to modify the receiver at all. Just screwed in the adapter and attached the folding section along with the stock and I was in business. VERY easy to do. ACE Inc |

I dont know if the 84S and the 56S are similar as far as the Trunions but I put a ACE side folding stock on my 56S. All that was needed was an adapter and it was good to go. Its compact and extremely sturdy. When its locked in place its like having a fixed stock! If the Trunion's aren't the same then check as they may have an adapter for it. BTW: I live in NY also and was in the same situation as you. It sucks living behind the iron curtain but we do have options! Good Luck!

It's odd that NY doesn't consider swapping the stock styles as a violation of their ban. The ATF has a problem w/922(r) if you go from thumbhole to pistol grip/stock, so I just figured NY would not like changing out stocks either. Go figure, huh? The banners can't get together and figure out what to ban. |
the rommy folder on my mak 90 is really sturdy even with just one screw. i only took off enough material from the folder to allow it to be beat in not exactly on purpose, but once half way i was commited! it was a very stressful 20 min. and i doubt it will ever come out.i would hate to see any harm come to your pre-ban. and as said before if it was me i wouldn't alter it. if a new made folder can be used call up falcon arms. i just saw where they were making fal style folders for ak's in shotgun news. since their manufacturing them maybe you could get one with holes not drilled yet, and drill em yourself. best of luck 2D2C |
| When I had a krink build done on an 84S by The Firing Line in OK they installed the side folder so perfectly you would never know it wasn't like that from the factory. I want to have them do it again to a Bulgy AK74 I have. It is not cheap or quick but I think the end result is worth it. |

Hello, I had a problem with my Romanian side folder, but it actually turned out to be a problem with my rifle. My rifle isn't a Chinese variant, but I decided to post this just to add extra information. I hope you don't have the same problem that I had: Link |
| OK .... Here is what I think I should do.. tell me if this sounds like it may work.. First, weld the holes in on the folder.. Grind and clean up.. Then re-drill and tap the holes in the location that matches the rear trunnions hole pattern. Vola! Work is all done on the cheapest part (the folder) |

how far are the screws off? does the stock need to go further in, left, right, etc? if they are not far off just do some sanding on the stock to make it fit. dremel fixes everything. on my saiga-12 i have to hammer the stock on to get it tight enough for the screw holes to line up. |
I put a Romy folder on a G kit I built on a flat. It was a drop in installation. |
back on topic ... anyone see a better approach? |
