Hi guys. I'm looking to buy a new semi-automatic rifle. Im looking for something I can buy surplus ammunition for for CHEAP. I'm looking for a rifle that I can throw around, shoot ALLOT, and not have to worry about it. My ar15 is my baby....I only shoot m885 through it wich is pretty expensive for me to just blow through like nothing : D and the .22s are getting boring. I know NOTHING about Aks and would like to learn something about them. Before I start I would just like to ask.....am I looking for too much out of an AK? Im tired of cleaning perfect and treating every single firearm I own like a collectable. I paid allot of money for my things and would like to take care of them.....but would like a rifle I cane use and abuse. What do you think?
P.S. where can I learn the basics of the AK? Not rifle basics, but basics specifically to the AK platform. : D
Thanks!
Dave

Any AK will handle some tough treatment or neglect (as long as you aren't shooting corrosive ammo).  However if you're looking to outright abuse it I would suggest a WASR.

As long as you don't intend to thrash it I say look into the Yugo M70's.  They tend to be very solid.  Or perhaps a SAR or Maadi if you can find one.

These are on the more affordable side of AK's.  The WASR should be under $400 and the others should be $500 or less.

ETA:  They will all function the same.  The difference in build matters when it comes to how well the magwell was machined, whether the front sight is canted, whether the receiver is dimpled on the sides next to the magwell (prevents the magazine from wiggling), etc.

That doesn't mean that the WASR is automatically crap.  It just means that you should hand inspect it to make sure it was assembled correctly before buying it, while the others are a safer bet in build quality.

Another option is the Saiga.  It's inexpensive but well made at actual Russian manufacturing plants.  If you're handy with tools at all you can convert it to pistol grip and normal capacity mags instead of the 10 round proprietary mags that come with the Saiga.

If you want cheap surplus ammo, you will have to get a 5.45x39 caliber ak.  There is no cheap 7.62x39 anymore.

True, but the 5.45 AK's are getting more pricey along with the 5.45 magazines.

If your not buying wolf or corrosive surplus ammo Don't expect it cheap period.
The only cheap ammo you'll find these days is .22LR.

From NJ?  You might have to look at a pre-ban weapon, or, have one made into a ban type weapon...no bayonet and I believe your muzzle brake needs to be permanently attached.  I'm really not sure.  Check the Hometown Forum first.

Wolf works great in AK's, much better than in an AR.  Are you saying you don't want steel case at all?  Golden Tiger is another brand of steel case that is cheap.  I've never used it, but I hear it's good.

Doesn't want Wolf ammo, AKs love Wolf ammo.  Doesn't want corrosive ammo?  The cheap 5.45x39 ammo ($118.00 pre 1,080 rds) is corrosive so I guess that rules one of those rifles out.  Want something you can shoot surplus ammo out of?  Not too much surplus 7.62x39 ammo out there, mostly commercial which is expensive to those of us used to paying $80.00 per 1,000 rounds. And if there was any surplus 7.62x39 it would most likely be corrosive. Nowadays, $169.00 a case for commercial ammo is the norm for a good price and it isn't going to be AR15 accurate.

Brass cassed non-corrosive S&B will run you $300.00 per 1,000 rounds.

stick with 7.62x39.....is it as cheap as it used to be nope.....but still a good deal, and readily available, can pretty much walk into any gun shop, or sporting goods store and buy the stuff.....not true with 5.45x39 and that ammo is corrosive

why wouldnt you want to use wolf? there is nothing wrong with the ammo, especially the new military classic stuff, I like it alot.....my favorite has to be brown bear though, a little less dirty and a little more accurate.  Golden tiger is good to go as well.

7.62x39 can be found between $160-$180 per 1000
