First let me say hello to all, first post here.

I've been looking at getting a scope mount for my romanian SAR-3, but I'm kind of at a toss up between 2 styles, the top cover replacement and the side mount.

Any info to the advantages/disadvantages of either would be greatly appreciated.

Stabilizing the top cover, and retaining zero after removal for full cleaning, is problematic.

Siderail brackets rarely have a centerline directly over the gun's center, but are close usually and not critical in a 200yd gun.

I have a MTK75 with integral rings, and BP-02 Belarussian low mount, both are about $40.

There's always the UltiMAK... full disclosure, I know Lyle, creator of the UltiMAK.

I have a BP-02 mount on a GP-WASR-10, that seems to be working out quite nicely so far.

Here is an ak scope mount that wraps fully over the gun and fastens on both sides, it isnt supposed to inhibit removal of the dust cover and your not supposed to have to take it off for cleaning. I do not have one but I am ordering one real soon

I meant to add up there^. I wouldnt suggest a dust cover mounted rail due to the fact that inless you have a custom dust cover made they move way too much for any accuracy, Youd be better off using iron sights.

The BP-02 allows for removal of the dust cover while mounted, albeit not quite as easy.  Ya gotta hold yer mouth just right when you put the cover back on.

Side mount is the best, but be aware you will want to change out the top screws that hold the picatinney to the top.  . They are only three turns in, and will not hold up to abuse. Replace them with total depth screws from ace hardware Also Lock tight the whole damn thing. Then and only then will it hold a zero. I would not look sideways at a topcover mount.... Not a good option.

Well, I have a lot of personal opinions in this category.  My first opinion is, putting a scope on an AK is f_cking stupid especially on a ROMAK.  Second, it's even more stupid if you mount the scope on the dust cover.

If you absolutely insist on puting a scope on an AK type rifle use the side mount. <wishes there were a animation for shaking his head in confused wonderment>

The AK was not designed to be a precission weapon, especially not any of the ROMAKS that have been shipped to the US and marketed as SAR's.

IMHO, putting a scope on an AK is like dressing a Chimp in a Tuxedo.  Yeah the tuxedo is nice but it's still a Chimp in a Tuxedo.

Instead of responding here, I'll just point you over here where I just covered this.

I think putting a scope on an AK is fun, Put on on my SKS and it's one of my favorite rifles. For 100 yd plinking it's very enjoyable.

Put the dust cover on and it's held for over a thousand rds. Plus shot ballons at over three hundred yards.

Anyone have sources for the BP-02? FreedomOptics has them, but their website ordering is FUBAR, and I'm suspicious of any vendor that won't provide a phone number ....

I bought mine from him. Send email to confirm current inventory, Yuri replies, you send POMO and follow up email so he sets it aside for you. Took about 2 weeks.

Freedom/Yuri or Tantal/Doug are the best at this so far, with good info and always selling goods that are HERE.

Just be sure to get the bp02 low version, not the periscope 1" higher version I started with the other year.

+1

I don't know Lyle, but I am down with the UltiMAK.  It is the real deal.  Well made, solid, and the forward mount is the ticket for red-dots, IMHO.

Went with Tantal for the BP-02 Low. Slid right onto my VEPR-K side rail. Used Weaver QD mid rings and a 4x32 Marlin scope that I took off a 1972 vintage 336 I inherited from my Dad.

Objective lens sits right over the rear sight, about as low as you can get everything. Trying hard not to have to use a ladder for my cheek!

Feels solid and am anxious to try out, but the weather sucks in New England this weekend, rain through midday yesterday and high wind (15-45 mph) warnings for today, not exactly a good time for zeroing a new scope setup.
