Looking for a good affordable optic mount for my WASR-10. Right now I’m looking at the NcStar and UTG side mount. Which one will you choose? Or are they so similar that it doesn’t really matter? Thank

For a little more money you can get a real mount

IMHO, you should just save a bit longer and buy a better mount. Yes, I know sometimes funds are tight, but I think it is 10 times worth it to buy top quality products even if it did cost half the gun. Unless you are going with a straight russian optic like the POSP, the three best I have found in research are K-Var, Midwest Industries, and RS Regulate, with RS Regulate being the best. I spent $184 on an RS Regulate mount, top and bottom (multiple set up options) and it cost more than my Lucid M7 red dot, but it was absolutely worth it. The craftsmanship is amazing, quick detach with only the flip of a lever, can adjust the top half of the mount so your optic is directly over bore (AK's have so many variables), no issues with field stripping while the mount is still on, is tough as hell, and most important, holds zero even after removing my red dot, tapping it on a rock, and throwing it back on. Popping it off too to use iron sights takes literally about 3 seconds, same to put it back on.
Don't buy a cheap mount that will break or not hold zero, then buy another mount again because there were issues with the first. BUT, if you are adamant about buying a cheaper mount, go with the UTG. Some of their products have been much better over the past few years, NcStar is still crap. |
| I ran the UTG mount til recently with an old compact scope that was in my spare parts bin, worked fine, centered over the receiver and always held zero after removal & reinstall. Didn't want to spend a lot of $$$ cause I wasn't sure I was going to stick with the scope and now I'm glad, went to a red dot on my quad rail instead. I'd recommend the UTG over NCstar but if you're spending over $150 on a scope/optic I'd spring for the Kalinka. Midwest Ind. makes the best mount IMHO but I think it's over $100 these days. |

I ran the UTG978 5th Gen ($35-40) on 3 Saiga AK's just fine for a long while..
On my VEPR 762x54R I went with the above mentioned http://Kalinka Optic BP-02 Low Mount ($60) <<make sure you get the low one.. << For my latest Saiga 762x39 I splurged and got the RS Regulate AK301 and AKML (Aimpoint mount) mount for $180 from PArms.. and will be trying out the PArms MD06 red dot with it.. |
