Does anyone know the fundamental differences between POSP, POS, PU, and the Zrack scopes? Are these just as good as top quality US-Made optics, or are they just for show? Any you would recommend for the AK platform?

POSP = Belarus by Zenit

PSO = Russia by NPZ and on a limited scale, Belarus by Zenit

Zrak = Bosnia

All three are quite similar in operation.  Often a persons budget dictates what one has, as the NPZ and (especially) Zrak optics can be somewhat pricey in comparison to the POSP line-up.  I own multiples of all 3 types and find them to be quite effective optics.  Zraks tend to be cammed for a particular round, so be careful when purchasing one if you intend to use that feature as designed.

I found a good deal on a 4x24 POSP mounted for AKM, but it's calibrated for 7.62x54r. Will I run under problems with the bullet drop compensator if used for 7.62x39? I've read of people saying it works just fine considering it was intended for a 7.62x54r rifle, but I don't like forking over cash until I know the full story

Probably means it has the 1000 meter Dragunov reticle.  I prefer the 400 meter Simonov reticle version for a 7.62x39 rifle, but the 1000m reticle will certainly work.

The elevation and windage turrets of either version of the 4x24 POSP (1000m or 400m reticle) are not cammed/BDC'd for a particular cartridge, so you lose nothing in that regard.  The reticle of the 400m Simonov version is BDC'd for the 7.62x39 cartridge, but the turrets are not.

Thanks for the info! Just found a POSP scope with a 400m Simonov reticle at Steel City Armory for 169. Might be picking that up here in a short while

The POSP 4x24 is a great scope for the money.  I have the same scope mounted on my M72 RPK.

The info posted by Liquidmetal is pretty much right on. The PSO stuff by NPZ is about as close to true military spec as you can get in com block optics.  Pretty much the cream of the crop.  The POSP is a commercialized version of the military optics.  Both are very good optics.  For use an an AK you want the 400m simonov reticle.  The elevation cams are the same, but the simonov reticle has a lower chevron for 200m with 7.62x39.  The 1000m dragunov has chevrons for 1100m 1200m 1300m with 7.62x54r

I'm actually going to go with simonov reticle saving up a little cash to get it in the next month. Does the mount allow use of the iron sights?

Kalinka's scope description and reticle pic also mentions there only being 100 and 200 meter chevrons on the 4x24 Simonov reticle.

For a long time the 4x24 POSP with the Simonov reticle came with three chevrons: 100, 200, and 300 meters respectively.  If this change to two chevrons is indeed true, it must be a relatively recent change.  My 4x24 with the Simonov reticle has the three chevrons.  Granted, my scope is a few years old now.

Anybody purchased one recently that can confirm the deletion of the third chevron?

Yes, the scope is offset to the left to allow the use of irons with the scope in place.

This one from Steel City Armory is that way, and from what I can tell its brand new

That's just a rendering of a reticle and not an actual pic of the reticle itself, it doesn't confirm anything.  For years, the Simonov reticle came with three chevrons.

I stand corrected. The site says, "The 400 meter Simonov height based gradient (choke style) rangefinder has holdover aiming marks for quick reaction shooting at 100 and 200 meters, when used with 7.62x39mm. Once the primary inverted chevron aiming mark is adjusted for zero at 100 meters, the next two lower chevrons are bullet drop compensated for shots at 200 meters automatically." so that makes a total of 3 chevrons, correct?

No, and that's what I'm getting at.

Simonov reticles like the one I own have 3 chevrons, the first is zeroed at 100 meters and then the second and third are BDC'd at 200 and 300 meters respectively.

Kalinka's description claims 2 chevrons, with the first zeroed at 100 meters and the second (there is no third) BDC'd at 200 meters.

Kalinka's description used to read as the scope having three chevrons as I describe above, at some point that was reduced to two.

Kalinka's editing of the description sucks and contradicts itself.  I'm looking for someone that actually owns a new 4x24 with the Simonov reticle to set the record straight.

Im the owner of Steel City Armory, All the scopes I am currently getting from Belarus have only 2 chevrons. They just started doing this and most places havent had a chance to correct their descriptions yet. But for some reason, some other scopes with the 400m Simonov are coming with 3 chevrons still, depending on the model.. Not really sure why the switch.
