I have 2 russian slabside mags that appear to have been painter with flat black paint similar to paint that would be used on a BBQ.  What is the best way to get it off?  I was just going to us paint thinner but I thought it might damage whatever original finish that was still on the mag.  I realize that they are somewhat collectable.  The guy I got them from said that when he got them the had some rust and about 60% of the original finish on them and that he removed all of the rust and spray painted them.  I got the pair for $10.   Thanks

I'd just sandblast them and start over.

I've used a dremel with a wire wheel to remove paint from mags.  The blueing underneath was unaffected.  Takes some time, but it works, and removes rust too.  This does wear on the wire wheel, so beware you'll need a few if you're doing a lot of mags.

Some slabs were painted.  Due to their collectability, please be gentile removing any paint so you don't ruin the mag.

I think I've heard of some people using steel wool and paint thinner.

Birchwood Casey Blue and Rust remover, wipe it on there, the color of the stuff you just put on should get a bit lighter and it should wipe right off.

This is the same stuff you can take the bluing off the Bolt Carrier

The rusted out (Bloody?) ones I received from Sportsmans Guide a while back, I
Just took a 3M Green pad to them then spraypainted them OD Green.
