| I just bought a new AK. What are the best mags for the money? New? Surplus? I really have no idea what I should be looking for. Brand names would be nice. Or countries of origin if surplus. |
|
I agree with the above. The best 7.62x39 mags out there are the Bulgarian waffles and the Polish polymer slabsides. They're more than durable enough for ANY type of use, they can't rust, and they're lighter than steel mags. But from a functional standpoint, foreign steel mags are just as good. |

What is your budget for mags and ammo? I also like the Bulgarian waffle mags but you pay a premium for them. K-Var is usually the best source for them. Steel mags are as tough as hell and cheaper. I prefer the the Eastern European makes with the support rib down the back to the non ribbed Chinese mags. Buy'em, load 'em and blast away! |

My budget isn't very large as I am in college. However, I was thinkning of picking one or two in the near future and then adding to the collection as time went on. I will look at the surplus mags. Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately I bought a pro-mag magazine when I got the gun. I did not really know much when I bought the magazine and just took what the sales guy handed me. How bad are Pro-Mags for plinking at the range? Not that I am interested in buying any more, its just that I already boought and opened the nag and am not sure what the return policy is at the store I got it from. |

Go ahead and use your Pro-Mag. If it works, it works. I usually tell people to build up a stash of a dozen or more good condition foreign 30 round steel mags to start with. Then branch out into "collector" mags like Bakelites, different capacity mags like 20s, 40s, and drums, and "improved" mags like Bulgarian waffels. |
