What do I look for in buying 30rnd AK magazines? polymer or steel? country of origin? etc etc.
Is it better to buy online?
are certain magazines strictly range mags that jam up while others you would bet your life on?

and when the hell is MAGPUL gonna make 7.62x39 magazines

For general use, you want steel, eastern-bloc surplus mags like these or these.  The 20 rounders are nice for shooting off the bench.

AIM is a site sponsor and great to do business with.  If you receive a non-functioning mag, they'll make it right.

Bulgarian waffle mags are nice too, but a bit spendy IMO.

Basically as long as it is a military surplus magazine it will be fine.  I would avoid anything made strictly for the commercial whether it was made in Bulgaria, Korea, or the United States.

I received 10 of these on Friday.  They looked BRAND new.  Wiped a little cosmo off the outside, clean as a whistle on the inside.  You won't find a better price, better mag anywhere or a better dealer than AIM.  JMHO.

Steel: No dents or rust, military manufacturer (no Korean)
Polymer: military manufactuer, metal reinforces feed lips and front and rear locking lugs

polymer or steel?

Either is good, but polymer can't dent or rust and is lighter. Junk US made polymer mags won't hold up as well as military ones will, which will hold up better than steel mags for the aforementioned reasons.

country of origin?

Doesn't matter as long as it's a real military magazine (or identical to one).

Is it better to buy online?

Odd question. What do you mean?

Kind of.

There are worthwhile mags and not worthwhile mags. The mags that aren't worthwhile are the US made mags (metal and polymer). They're the same price as real military mags (or more) and don't offer the longevity or durability.

Never.

During the "big panic" a year ago, I bought a bunch of rusted mags from Centerfire for about 7.50 each.... They took a LOT of work but all run fine now. I feel pretty stupid that like-new AK mags are going for the $9-10 range now though.....

Just bought a couple of these 40rd mags for $6.59ea for my RPK. Might get some more after I torture test the first one or two.
