It seems to have just happened to 7.62x54 almost overnight.  Some is still left for a 20% higher price, but the Hungarian has vanished and was the best as far as I could tell.  50s Bulgarian is all that is left.  AIM and Century are both out.

Does anyone have any idea how much 5.45 there really is at Century, ORF, Aim, etc?

The most expensive ammo is the tin you didn't get, when you go *CLICK* and wanted to go *BANG*. Eat hot dogs and ramen noodles for a while and sock the 5.45x39 away.

I second this.  If you actually want to be able to pull some out years from now anyways...

I keep thinking about ordering a case or two and I do not even have a rifle that uses this round any longer.

WTF is your malfunction?

5.45 AKs are the best deal in EBR today.

Get this, I had one!

It was a new bulgy kit assembled by AK-USA on a heat treated OOW receiver.  I sold it about 2 or 3 years ago because at the time it was difficult finding 5.45.  IIRC, all I could find was Wolf HP for around 180 per case.  I had read reports that the Barnaul was much more accurate of the 2 but it was no were to be found.  That is when I noticed you could pick up a case of XM193 5.56 for about $180 per case which is known to be quality ammo.  So I sold the Russian rifles with hard to find ammo in favor of 5.56 rifles.

My how times have changed

Furthermore, about a year ago I made a similar post about the South African 308.  Everyone keep saying it's days were numbered and I thought about buying a case or two of it while I could.  I never did

Really dumb question, but with this at $120 for 1080 shipped for five or more tins, and no volume discount on 7.62x39 that's nearing or at $200 per 1K, are you taking your own advice and at least buying some ammo?

5.45x39 rifles aren't that hard to come by and they function just fine. I also suspect that you'll be able to find them here and there long after the surplus now flooding the country is come and gone.

Keep in mind my original post is that I'm considering getting a case or two.  But 5.45 is not the only good buy at the moment.  I first need to stock up on CMP 30-06 while it is still affordable and I do have a rifle chambered for that round.  I am in the process of doing this.

Oh, I don't have any 7.62x39 rifles any longer either so the price of that does not concern me.  But is still looks cheap compared to the current prices of 5.56.

Did you really get rid of a Tigr and an RPK?!

Of those, I miss the Tigr the most.  I miss the 74 due to todays cheap ammuntion prices.  I don't so much miss the SSR85C or the RPK.

Giving up a Tigr would leave a hole in my heart, damn.

I've got about 6 can stashed.  I'm going to pick up two more this month.  And will continue to by at least one can a month until its gone.

It runs out right before you decide that "today I am picking up 5 cases of that cheap 5.45"....
Shit... I need to heed some of my own advice..... >(checking bank balance.... and Ramen and baby food supply....) hmmmmmm....

This thread made me buy another 2-tins of Russian...

I am up over 5000 rounds of this now and 5.45x39 is not one of my SHTF cartridges of choice....  Still, I can take an AK-74 and a Tin of this and put it at a BOL and feel comfortable knowing if something wold happen and I couldn't get home I can head to a BOL and have a capable weapon system and ammo!

$210 for 2160 rounds...  How can I not?

I know the feeling about needing to stock other ammo before jumping on the 5.45. For me I want a couple cases for my K31 or maybe a pallet. I sure do love shootin that rifle.

K31 is the other I can use and want to get a backlog of before moving onto the 5.45.  Quality stuff for sure.

i suspect with the new NATO countries switching over, there may be billions of rounds to go.....we have only got a sample of a few years

No doubt there are billions of rounds out there. The big question is-- will we be able to get all of it, or will UN and .gov intervene and make it stop? Remember, at times like this: Buy it Cheap, and Stack it Deep!

Century extended their sale to the end of this month and who know if it will get extended again?  Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

Don't worry about when. Buy enough to wear out your gun. That's what I did. I bought the 5.45 AK solely as a training rifle and I bought 25,000 rounds for it when I did. Supposedly a chrome barrel has a lifespan of accurate shooting of about 20,000 rounds. When I get that ammo all shot up, most of it in hot strings, I'll toss the rifle in the closest trash barrel and figure that I got my money's worth in shooting cheap ammo.

I need to stop buying guns to afford that much ammo.. perhaps I'll bring the guns and you supply the ammo

I got my latest case of 2-tins of this stuff so I am up to 5400 rounds of of this Russian stuff.  If I can stop buying guns or paying taxes on the guns I would like to get one more case of this stuff (another 2160 rds) but given how little I really shoot my AK-74s this is more then a lifetime supply for me but I am buying because it is so cheap and these tins are all sealed so the ammo should last a very long time.
