Hi dark-siders,
I'm building up an AMD-65 (as an SBR), and I have some concerns about terminal ballistics.  This will be a "truck gun", and even with the tax stamp, it's cheaper than an AR.  With an AR, though, I have a pretty good idea (thanks B&T ammo labs!) what to expect in the way of terminal ballistics above ~2700 FPS.  My question is: what can I expect out of the AMD?
I have heard 7.62x39 ballistics compared to .38 spl (because of lack of expansion).  What does regular Russian FMJ ammo do out of a 12" bbl?  What about a longer barrel?  What are the velocities like?  What ammo has better terminal performance?  Since this rifle will be more for business than plinking, I'd like to know.

Thanks much,
fiz

BankerBilly chrono'd a 12.6" AMD and found only about 150fps lost, so the Russian ammo seems to get it's burn done early.
Try Remington.com for data on their CoreLokts, which expand and retain mass quite well for hunters.

Contrary to popular ARFCOM urban legend, some russian soft points DO expand...at least the Barnaul 125gr. SP ammo I tested did:

~14-16" penetration in refried beans

This is the ammo I'd be looking for.  You'll probably have to mail order it, though, as Wolf has a far better marketing department.  I'm still waiting for Midway to get their next Barnaul shipment in, but the expected date keeps getting pushed back two weeks at a time, time after time!

For comparison, here's what Wolf COPPER HP bullets look like after taking on the refried beans:

yes, but the total core separation is a bad thing.

Thanks for the info, G-rated!  I'll look for the Barnaul.  'anybody have any other experience with 7.62x39 terminal ballistics, especially out of the AMD-65 bbl?  (hopefully not on the receiving end...)

Don't know about how it'd be affected by your shorter barrel, but Lapua soft points and cheapo Winchester soft points expand very reliably and penetrate well (good for hunting, better than pretty much any other option 7.62 x39 has for terminal ballistics).

Polymer-tipped bullets exist for this round, but I've never seen reports of how these perform in gel.  Maine cartridge company loads Hornady's v-max, but I wonder if it would just fragment too quickly.  Georgia Arms loads a Nosler ballistic tip in theirs, which seems a little beefier.

I don't know if either of these bullets are .308 or .310/.311.

I understand for ideal hunting rounds you want jacket and all to stay together, but for self defense against 2-legged predators, are they really going to notice the difference?

BTW, the lead stuck together, it was only the jacket that seperated.

And you're more likely to find laquer seals on the commie stuff, so the trunk ammo goes bang when you finally need it.

If  you go to the sticky page in the ar15 forum and read the report on the ak74 there is a very good sentance that everyone seems to over look " all military style rounds that hit bone did extreme damage" I would think your odds of hitting bone in someone is really good.

This is 5.45, not 7.62, right?

7.62 FMJ resembles .38 special in human flesh. Make sure you shoot till they go down and stay down

The good part is its not really (hardly at all) dependent on velocity.

yes 5.46 but he said any military style round. Any center fire rifle round will fragment bone . as for the 7.62x39 being like a 38spl I dont think so , a 38spl wont take a deer cleanly a 7.62x39 will, I think the 762 is closer to a 30/30....I think?

In exerior ballistics, yes.  The difference that concerns me is between FMJ bullets and decent hunting bullets designed to expand in soft tissue.
