Hello I've been shooting the old HP ammo in my stash up. Mostly the stuff in the blue box that says "Production Association Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant" 1998 vintage. Seems to me this stuff is crap. Picked up a couple boxes of the Barnaul SP, it seemed loaded hotter(?) and shot preety accurately in my rifle. Wish I'd tried it before I ordered the case of Wolf 154SP. This brings me to my question. Has any one tried any expandsion tests on this stuff? I remember Wolf came out with a SP a while back but it never actually expanded.(It also was crap) The Barnaul looked good and had a soft point that looked like it might actually expand instead of just a blob of lead smeared over the point. How about this stuff? Anyone know? Thanks |

I haven't tried any expansion tests but everything I read over at that other AK board indicated that the Barnaul SP expands very good. I do know that after putting 1000rds of Wolf FMJ and 500rds of Barnaul SP through my SA M-7: 1. Barnaul was 100% reliable Wolf was 99.5% reliable 2. Barnaul is definitely hotter 3. Barnaul would sometimes penetrate 3/8" steel plate. Wolf never did. |
| Both brands SP were some of the better groups in our ammo test last year. I know little about expansion results. I do know that the 154 Wolf has a better rep for deer hunting than the 125 Barnaul. Extra mass seems much better at going through ribs and such. The hunting section on Parallax's board would be a good place to read also. |
