I am brand new to the AK scene, been stuck over on the AR forum for a while and Own 2 AR15's. I am looking into getting and AK so i can have the ability to have a wider selection. But I am very confused on the ammo types. ie 7.62x45, 7.62x39 what are the differences? cause I know with AR's something chambered in 556 can shoot both the 223 and 556 rounds. but chambered in 223 can be harmful to shoot the 556 which is a slightly larger round

thanks guys

The most popular AK-47 variant you will find, will be chambered in 7.62x39. These rifles will only shoot that caliber.

You can also get an AK-74 variant that shoots the 5.45x39. These will only shoot that caliber.

You can get other AK action rifles in several other calibers. Whatever is listed on the rifle, is what you will have to shoot through the rifle. Of course the ones chambered in .223 you can shoot 5.56 out of.

I hope this makes sense.

Get all three calibers is the popular answer around here.

The "5.56 out of .223 rifle" question is irrelevant when speaking about AKs. An AK that shoots .223 can shoot 5.56 fine....they aren't ARs, plus they work well with lacquer crap .223.

Rifles that shoot 7.62X54 (if thats what you meant by 7.62X45) are generally larger types....the PSL/Romak III (all the same) is just a long AK in the heavier round. The 7.62X54 is also used in the PKM machine gun, SVD Draganov and Mosin rifles...couple other rarer ones too.

Most common rounds for the AK style rifle are
1- 7.62X39
2- 5.45X39
3- 5.56X45/.223

Maybe you mean 7.62x54R?  The Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 is chambered for that cartridge.

There is a 7.62x45mm round. It was used by the Czechs in their Vz-52 rifle. Both the gun and the ammunition are available as surplus, but neither have ever been very popular and they are not very common now.

5.56 is the caliber (diameter of the slug) in Millimeters
.223 is a fractionally smaller caliber in inches  (.223 of an inch)

7.62 millimeter and 5.45 millimeter is the diameter of the slug so even though the cartridge is the same length, they are definitely not interchangeable without bad things happening.

There are others on here that are far smarter and more experienced than I, but this may help...
